Perhaps all this "universal platform" BS and fallout will see a return to independent forums and content based sites.

Federated decentralization is good for information based communities, and bad for homogeneous monitization, keeping said information more time secure as opposed to time transient for more clicky clicky ad revenue.

Unless of course you get ransomwared by Russians, then we have to start the paintball conversational all over again. Meh its worth it.

Yeah, I'm on Lemmy, it's similar to the old days or the web. Not a ton of content yet but it's growing a lot since Rexxit

I'm all for federated content. I'm still trying to figure Lemmy out, but I really see this as the way of the future. It's the ultimate in decentralization.

Never used it (hate Reddit format too difficult to navigate and up vote/down vote just plain silly in application) so not going to miss it at all.

Everyone hates the format. That's why we were all using third party apps that streamlined everything. Lol

I use reddit mostly for one community, where we have a daily thread that everyone uses as just a big general free talk. There's a few hundred, loosely associated folks, and we all get along (for the most part). That works well in the reddit format.

Long term knowledge gathering and sharing sucks on reddit.

      Couple things:

I personally never used the third party apps. I actually wasn't really even aware of them until I found out they were being, in my view unfairly, killed off. This would hamstring the only other active mod: Seaskimmer. The more I read about how reddit was reacting to all of this the less impressed I was. When we did the test blackout with a large portion of the rest of the site I got a fair amount of pushback from angry users. Doesn't bother me; I've been moderating forums for years and I'm used to being literally satan incarnate for any decision.

I was actually more irritated with the entire indifference from the majority of the sub. It seemed like only drastic action, which I've largely avoided while modding the place for the last ~10 years, would be the only thing to either force people to acknowledge this. The hate for me has reached new, exciting levels as apparently I'm literally ruining people's lives. Y'all should see my inbox, I'm tellin' ya.

Why did I take the shot at /u/spez? Two reasons: First off he is making decisions that have huge negative implications for the site a la when Musk took over Twitter to improve it. Second, he used to be a moderator of the jailbait subreddit which was pictures of scantily clad underage girls. When we repeat those sorts of things in close proximity the idea is that google searches will association them. You may have seen similar trends when discussion Chris Brown the woman beater. "Oh, are you guys talking about Chris Brown the woman beater? Man, I hear Chris Brown the woman beater beats women." etc.

I did ban a couple of especially visceral people who made attacks at me. My favorite is the guy who demanded I unban him, remove myself as a mod, and put him in place. And that he was a calm, well-adjusted person full of reason. 24 hours later of not giving in to his demands this is the stuff he's sending me (WARNING, NAUGHTY LANGUAGE)

Anyway still riding this crazy storm out. I don't know where it'll end up.

Moderating is absolutely a thankless job. The pedo-vibe I was getting in numerous areas of Reddit were another reason I stepped away from it. FYI the link above gives a 404 error, which is disappointing cause I just made popcorn.

Hope you get that link fixed. Like Jonny, I am curious. [EDIT: Sorry, should have looked downthread first.]

I'd be glad to help if you need it. All those rules violation reports that just say "BST" are from me. I mod r/EnglishHeritage, which takes absolutely no effort aside from swatting away the occasional spambot. I chose not to have EnglishHeritage engage with the protests because it is a tiny, extremely low traffic sub that Reddit couldn't care less about. And because it is frequently mistaken for an official mouthpiece of the organization called English Heritage (it's not) and they wouldn't want to be seen as getting involved in some potentially divisive internet fight.

Not surprised to see you on here Bones. My browsing is basically down to r/rockncock because of all of this. I'm gonna miss our little slice of paintball but I'm looking forward to being more active here…

Man that's not the first time I've heard my imgur links aren't working. And it works for me even in a private window. What other image hosting sites are there... hang on lemme try this other image hosting thing I just googled. AGAIN, NAUGHTY LANGUAGE WARNING:

BonesJackson So just out of morbid curiosity, are you feeling like the whole Spez business is more or less the final nail in the coffin for Reddit or are you locking down the sub for a while to drive home a message and call him out for his sketchy past? If the end result is to simply board it all up and say to hell with it, then I'm sure people will eventually migrate over to other platforms (whichever that may be). Although, I'm not sure if Zuck or the Chinese are any better.

They should come back here this place is awesome.

And legit I don't know how it will pan out. Is reddit so functionally broken that they'll be too inept to remove me as a mod? Time will tell.

I refer people here constantly, especially those with older markers they just got from their uncle/neighbor/whoever and want to get them running. But I believe r/paintball still has value as a highly visible, easily accessible point of contact, especially for people newly interested in the sport.

Yeah, Mr BearClaw is right. For a lot of people, reddit has turned into the front line of information finding. Many younger people don't even bother to seek out forums or anything outside the big social media sites for information.

Nah, according to r/magfed it has “only speedball guns” despite mostly having pump markers on it. Either way, sorta lame.

Reddit was maybe the first social media site I just didn't 'get' at all about why it was so popular, it always just seemed like a worse forum. I think I have an account there but haven't logged on in at least 5 years.

Speaking of terrible social media, don't even get me started on tiktok or twitter.
