LG 48CX or Super Ultra Wide?

It's a good time to be alive!

The 48" CX OLED from LG looks amazing as a Monitor for gaming. I has my sights on the Samsung 50" mega wide but I'm thinking the LG might be the better option.
I still have a Panasonic Plasma that I'd argue is better than newer LCD's as a TV, it's seriously like 12 years old. Not a great option for a Monitor but the visuals are more similar to OLED.

As someone that plays on both, a couch and a desk, it depends on where you'll be sitting. I have both a 55" OLED and an Ultrawide 34" Alienware monitor. I wouldnt be able to use the 55" on a desk, and vice versa. I say get them both and connect them to an AV receiver

ha! well desk space is competing with a "24" work monitor, and my current 24" LED monitor (the first Acer LED that was $300) - still looks and works very well actually for only 1080p.

This the LG if I went with it would be used with my PC and my PS4 Pro. I'm all about the visuals and it looks like the OLED with a new AMD or Nvidia GPU would hit that spot... assuming I can even find a new GPU lol.

GPU availability should be much better by Christmas. Yeah these utra wide monitors are huge. it's getting out of control. As is, with my 34 ultrawide, if i was to go any wider -- I'd have to sacrifice my JBL 308's. I have a pretty big "L" shape tempered glass desk, and I have the right speaker on a speaker-stand, but I wouldnt be able to fit the left one anywhere if I go any wider. Regardless, I'm really happy with my current setup. I actually have two big screen TV's connected to my receiver. A 55" OLED in the game room and a 75" Sony 900F in the living room. And I alternate between all three with the receiver. The Ultrawide is directly connected via Displayport and then I run an HDMI cable to the AVR from the computer.

you guys are luck i have to get one for editing photo and video they are not cheap since have ability do color correction on them by it self

Ya these would not be great for editing. The colors get pretty close but you really need a specialized monitor for either Adobe or Web design.

The Alienwares are pretty good for photo. It's an IPS panel. Same ones they use for their DELL professional monitors.

Do you have an ultrawide now? I have both the Alienware 34 inch Ultrawide and the new Samsung 49" inch double wide G9 Odyssey. I would caution against jumping straight to a double wide if you haven't used/gamed on an ultra before. The double wide brings some quirks and with it being the first one commercially available does have its doenfalls, mainly looks like hot garbage in menus for games and movies with lots of dark scenes because of how the monitor only has 10 FALD zones for HDR lighting. That being said I absolutely love the monitor because the colors pop like crazy for gaming, low latency and high refresh rate with gsync support.

Negatives to double wide: even less supported than ultrawide. Lots of games need edits in INI files to force some comparability, launcher editors or just won't be supported. Games like Valorant look awful on it. It's simply super wide. It fills your entire field of vision and you will have to turn your head slightly to see things in the extreme corners where games love to out info. Some games are allowing you to adjust the hud to combat this, some aren't. Price, they are just stupid expensive.

With that being said, I play Witcher 3, Star Wars Squadrons, and Insurgency Sandstorm which all have native support for it and it's so immersive and amazing. They are just pretty niche and I highly recommend a regular UW if you haven't gamed on one before.

Very well said man. And yes, if you play FPS games online and you want to be competitive, I would strongly advice against going any wider than 34". As is with 34" Ultrawide, you're at a bit of a disadvantage in terms of tracking and hand/eye coordination. Not to mention that the bigger the resolution, the beefier the PC you will need to push those pixels. I think that 3440 X 1440 is the performance/fidelity sweetspot UHD resolution for ultra-wides vis-a-vis full blown 4K.

Edit: I mean, there's a reason why professional players, use smaller 24-27" monitors, at 1080p. And it's not only for the high FPS due to the smaller resolution, but it's also because everything's easier to see and track.

Just for a comparison on desk space, you need a huge desk with lots of space for the double wide. Colors are great though. Also, they do not have a monitor arm that can handle the G9 yet as the center of gravity is too far forward and it tilts forward without any hope of being level, so it's still on the desk stand for me at this point. The second photo is my 34" alienware UW.

Sweet setup. Did you have to modify TW3 Ini file for the Samsung 49"?

No, it has an option for 5120x1440 in the graphics settings.

I got to see a 48" LG Oled in person and I think I will go for that. I do have 2 1080p monitors for actual work so the TV will be for games, movies, and my PS4 Pro... and maybe even broadcast tv lol.
Probably will be around next March I'll actual pick something up, hopefully I can grab a 3080 or 6k AMD card by then. Well aware my 980 won't cut it.
