Anime Binge: on a roll with picks

I had anime fatigue this past year. But there's so much good shit out right now -- holy ****! I watched X-Men '97 ( not anime technically, I know), then I re-watched Death Note on Netflix, then I watched Cyberpunk Edgerunners, then Blue Eye Samurai, then Blue Lock (soccer meets Squid Game anime), and now I am watching Dead Dead Demons, I highly recommend it, although the english subs are shit.

I know Death Note is old but I had forgotten a lot of it -- and aside from that one which is old, I think we're in a golden era of animation currently. There's a lot of quality content IMO.

What are you guys watching? I'm not really into any of the shonen-y modern hits like Jujutsu Kaisen, Demon Slayer, My Hero Academia, Attack on Titan, etc.

A friend recommended Hakyuu! since I liked Blue Lock. What other good ones are out there?

I know you said you're not really into it, but I highly suggest AOT. It's not quite as shonen as the others and each season feels like a completely separate show. I absolutely loved it. Parasyte is another one that is shonen-adjacent, but I really liked it.

If you want something newer with OG flavor you could try the Rebuild of Evangelion series, I think it's all available on Prime.

I recently watched Goblin Slayer and Heavenly Delusion and enjoyed them both. GS is a bit of a rough watch, but if you can stomach the first episode it gets a bit lighter from there on out. I always just rewatched Elfenlied, which is one of my favorites, though it can be polarizing.

Monster is fantastic, but it's a commitment, well worth the time investment in my opinion.

I actually did watch AOT a few years ago. It was meh, TBH. And also Parasyte and Goblin Slayer. I did like Goblin Slayer, which reminds me I also watched Delicious in Dungeon and I thought it was good. And I'm downloading Frieren right now, which is another fantasy type anime thats supposed to be better than Goblin Slayer. But Parasyte and all of these new animes like Demon Slayer, Black Clover, Jujutsu Kaisen, etc are so similar even in the animation style. Jujustsu Kaisen is the best one out of those but not by much.

The Evangelion is a good rec. I actually want to go back and rewatch the OG anime before watching the newer ones.

Have you seen Dead Dead Demons? Its based on aliens. it's outstanding. It's truly next level shit. Even with the bad caption subs. Only 4 episodes out right now. But its been a while since I've found myself looking forward to the next episode release. I'm looking forward to it even more than the weekly GoT: House of Dragon episode.

...I have to check out Monster.

Fair enough! I am way more into the storytelling/character development than I am animation. It's cool to see unique styles, but low on my priority list for how I view different animes. I find it interesting that you enjoyed Delicious in Dungeon, I found that one sort of enjoyable, but it felt very similar to other vaguely-fantasy shows that I've seen.

Did you watch Berserk? That's a classic one that has newer iterations, though you can tell they ran out of budget for the 2016 version cause at one point the animation just goes to absolute shit, to almost humorous effect.

I haven't seen Dead Dead Demons, is it on Crunchyroll or?

Monster is very unique, I have not watched any other anime like it.

For a relaxing watch before bed I would recommend Mushishi.

I think I enjoyed Delicious in Dungeon because I was watching it in the morning while having my coffee. But I even forgot to mention in my OP. But yeah itโ€™s pretty mediocre. Have you seen Frieren? Or Blue Lock?

Dead Dead Demons is on Crunchy Roll, yea.

I think that Demon Slayer, and Black Cloven, and those animes are too similar in every way.

I really like the older animes including (the more muted color palette) of the early 2000โ€™s like Ghost In The Shell, Death Note, Cowboy Bebop. Those three are in my top 10 all time for sure. GITS top 3. I started Pluto just now. I like it but still, something about all of these new animes, theyโ€™re just not as good IMO

Everyone says weโ€™re in a golden age, yeah, but I havenโ€™t found a TV show that hooked me since the 2009 reboot of Mazinger. The last movie I liked was Hathawayโ€™s Flash.

I would like to fall in love with a show but Iโ€™m 50 now. Iโ€™m absolutely not interested in school kids AT ALL, not even if itโ€™s unique like Windy Tales. No school kids. None. No magic schools either. No remakes of anime the director saw as a child. Nothing whatsoever that takes place โ€œin a virtual worldโ€. I donโ€™t like violence anymore very much at all. So now, with those restrictions, is it still a Golden Age? Iโ€™d like a new Space Brothers or Kids on a Slope but Iโ€™m not into Jump retread that takes 500 hours to get through.

Whatโ€™s todayโ€™s equivalent to Gauche the Cellist or Angelโ€™s Egg? I donโ€™t want to hide from the world. Thatโ€™s not what anime is for. I want something that will squeegee my 3rd eye in under two hours and give me something to think about for the rest of my days. What is it?

Yeah, I have the Laserdisc of Memories with the flocked cover. Itโ€™s a masterpiece, clearly, but that was decades ago. Votoms is even older. I could teach a college level course on 70s-90s anime. Itโ€™s this supposedly great new stuff that Iโ€™m still ignorant of.

Dead Dead Demons has children but I would still recommend it. It delves into complex relationships and the writing and animation are amazing.

        Yes, I love Trigun too

Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet is amazing if itโ€™s on there.

Seven Deadly Sins on Netflix is pretty good too

FairyTail gets good the further into the story it gets, but itโ€™s goofy early on

Gurren Lagann was solid, but a little different

these are outside of the typical call for Bebop, Trigun, and Ghost in the Shell. If you can find the later episodes of Ghost where they went back to when the Major was first getting started, those were very good too.

If youโ€™re okay with graphic stuff Vinland Saga is great, and chainsaw man.

i would say Kaiju 8, solo leveling, Mashle (very fun and goofy like One Punch) and zom100 but I donโ€™t know if thatโ€™s too shonen.

delicious dungeon on Netflix is great, and sakamoto days is coming soon and looks great. Also spy x family is like a anime sitcom, very light hearted fun, with random badass moments.

of course the classics: cowboy bebop, black lagoon, trigun(tho new one is great), ghost in the shell, evangelion if you can stomach all the movies, samurai champloo, Afro samurai, and

Damn, Iโ€™ve never seen Black Lagoon. I didnโ€™t know it was considered a classic like that. Might have to download it.

Also Kaiju No 8. I see it on the top animes on Crunchy Roll, as well as Viral. I was considering those next

Black lagoon is like the world of John Wick, but the main characters are mercenaries. No cartoonish look or jokes, more adult.

And yes I would say wait for this season to end for Kaiju No. 8, cause it's such a good show and then it sucks when it ends on a cliffhanger every episode.

Im super into the hard sci fi stuff from the 80s and 90s.
War crap, fighting robots, guns and fast car chases.
Armored Trooper Votoms is my jam. I think you can watch the whole original series and the movies on Prime with an Add-on. Armored Hunter Mellowlink is a spinoff that i enjoyed and The Last Red Shoulder is the best Votoms movie imho.
Appleseed, Riding Bean, GunSmith Cats , Dominion Tank Police, exDriver, Golden Boy are on Youtube for free i think.
Dorohedoro is cool for newer, trippy stuff.
Shigurui Death Frenzy is brutal samurai stuff. I wish the series was as long and insane as the books.
Probly an obvious one with all the memes out now, but the original Berserk is also a masterpiece.

Have you guys seen the Suicide Squad anime? The first three episodes just dropped on Hulu and Max. The characters seem perfectly suited for an anime adaptation. I donโ€™t have Hulu or Max anymore but I might download it later
