    Basic Laptop Options

I'm looking for a basic laptop for my wife as hers bit the dust. She's no power user, will mostly just circle the web on Facebook and Pinterest. Used is fine, must be Windows. For reference, she had an HP Stream laptop she was happy with. I found it to be a flaming pile of shit and would like to get her something much faster. Thoughts?

    1) What is your budget?
    2) Are tablets an option?

Doesn't sound like you absolutely need a laptop. Something like a Kindle HD10 would do all of that and more for $150 USD (or manufacturer of your choice).

Lenovo has some chromebooks in the $200-ish range. I have never used their chromebooks - but they should do the job. I have always had good luck with Lenovo products.

    Good luck.

T480 (14 inch) or T580 (15 inch) are somewhat affordable used and are the best thinkpads made in a long time. Mega battery life and good keyboard. The T490 / T590 is not as good.

That's my reccomendation. Any thinkpad is OK.

Only spec to be sure and get is a 1080p display on these. They make one with a lower rez that kinda sucks even if you upscale your 1080p font size for legibility.

I would like to keep the cost around $300. Tablets are not an option because she likes the laptop form factor and does a lot of typing over FB messenger. I like Chromebooks but I'm not sure she will want to learn a new OS (not the most tech savvy person).

I have a Dell M2800 (needs a new screen), but I think it would be a bit bulky for her. So thin and maneuverable like the HP Stream she had would be a bonus.

Understood. If she has an android smartphone, I suspect she would find Chrome OS friendly.

Do you have a preferred screen size? Does she use any peripherals (keyboard, mouse, external hard drive, ethernet port, etc???)

Throwing out non-windows PCs and tablets and staying under $300 USD all in ... Maybe an IdeaPad 100 series. I don't have any experience with them,so I cant say i recommend them. However, the specs seem to meet your needs. The specs aren't great - but it should surf the internet just fine. The IdeaPad Flex 3 is a litte overbudget - but has a little more processing power.

She does have an Android phone, but she's always used Windows. Her HP Stream had like an 11" screen she seemed happy with. No peripherals. The Flex 3 is intriguing. I know something appealing to her would be a color like blue.

I would probably consider looking at some Dell Inspiron or XPS "13" refurbs or the like. No point wasting money on a turd that won't be good for anything else in a few years.

If you have a MicroCenter in your area they are a great place to shop.

I'd look at Thinkpad X series. Lots of them are using 5th or 6th intel processors and have SSD so very usable while being light as a feather.

Currently leaning towards an Asus Zenbook UX330 (used). Small and light, can be found for around $300, and plenty of speed for her. A Lenovo Ideapad S540 could be found for a little more used.

                    Thoughts?

                      If it's this:
ASUS ZenBook UX330UA | Laptops - ASUS USA

Not sure if they have kept similar specs along the line, but that is well worth 300 bucks.

In my option a screen of that resolution is absolutely wasted at that size. Not only that aspect but my old ass probably couldn't see it anyway.

Agreed 4K screens in laptops unless the laptop is a 17 inch model is dumb and even then it's not worth it. I find 1080P just fine
