    Total War Warhammer

If any of ya’ll like fantasy (sword & magic) and RPGs, I highly recommend giving Total War Warhammer II & III a try. I was always more of an RPG ‘er —never that into RTS myself, played some Starcraft II and Warcraft 3 back in the day but very casually. This game made me a full blown RTS fan though. Check this out:

This is actual gameplay footage, mostly zoomed in, in cinematic mode (removes the UI and menu):

There’s also castle battles. Either you defend or attack. Attackers use different kinds of siege weapons.

There are also RPG-like story elements, and you have personable heroes with skill trees.

Call in some space marines and I’m in. This looks pretty intriguing.

No Space Marines, sorry. That’s Warhammer 40k, this is regular, fantasy Warhammer. Also based on a miniature tabletop wargame. According to Wiki it’s from 1983. It’s similar to DnD, it’s inspired by Tolkien, but instead of a small party you have full scale warfare with heroes commanding whole armies.

        The wiki explains it better

BTW, Humble Bundle has TW Warhammer III for $15 (with 7 other games). It’s the lowest I’ve seen it:

although, personally, I would start with Warhammer II and do the Vortex campaign, even if the graphics aren’t as polished as the third installment,

I've always thought the total war engine/system would work brilliantly with a 40k game. Better, I think, than the Dawn of War RTS style.

              Fantasy is a start tho.

I would play a Total War Warhammer 40K. For sure.

There are elements / mechanics in the Total War games not present in the table top wargames though. Like the politics and maintaining settlements, etc. So in that sense, it’s actually more complex and enriched than the tabletop.

In Total War games, you have a two tiered strategy scheme: You have actual battle strategy and then you have campaign strategy (e.g. in terms of strategizing which citadels and/or outposts to attack/defend, settlement chain building, maintaining an economy, alliances, foreign relations, etc.)

…interestingly, when you start the game: you select two different difficulty levels: one for the campaign and one for the battle difficulty.

My only gripe is that if you never played before, playing on hard/hard, and even medium, can be quite the challenge and you most certainly need some of the better units they offer in the DLC’s. For instance: the Elven DLC that unlocks Sisters of Avelorn (missile/ bow units) is actually critical if you want to play on the harder difficulties even though High Elves are supposed to be the easiest faction to start with in Warhammer II, especially the Eataine High Elves with Tyrion (as legendary lord.) Making trade agreements and peace treaties is easier early on, and hence you can maintain a bigger (and higher quality) army early on which helps. But even so, playing on hard/hard can be challenging. But very, very fun. I highly recommend playing it.

They’re actually making a Total War Warhammer 40k

PC Gamer: Total War: Warhammer 40,000 is totally real, so we've created a wishlist to send to the Emperor
