Odd request but I am helping an older lady who's husband recently passed away and she told me she was trying to find a Betamax player to watch family videos. I assumed they would be dirt cheap... Apparently they are not. Anyone have one they dont mind moving? Or know a reputable place to find one reasonably? I dont mind paying a fair price but has to be tested/working. If not I will roll the dice on Ebay......

Couldn’t the tapes be transferred on to a disc or thumb drive? Rather than trying to find a player…Leave Feedback if you wants. https://www.mcarterbrown.com/forum/b...edgin-feedback -
I found one locally.... Great shape and powers up but unfortunately I have no way to test without a tape..... So fingers crossed on this one👍 2Comment

Will do, I am going to see her tomorrow and hopefully can set it up. I didn't look at her televisions to verify they have RCA jacks but hopefully she has one that does. If not I will have to order an adapter and head backComment

As someone who's fallen down the cassette and 8 track rabbit holes lately and is dealing with broken tape players, I wish you godspeed.Comment

Ha thank you, this thing looks fantastic for its age but who knows..... Hows your luck been fixing things? I dont mind tinkering with electronics but its definitely not my specialty -
Eh, it's a mixed bag. I was able to get a 1980's Onkyo tape deck, which was sold as working but wasn't when it got here, working again with just some fiddling and cleaning. Still have to replace a couple of leaky caps though. My early 70's 8 track/am/fm/shortwave receiver on the other hand took a lot of trouble shooting to find out why the 8 track only plays the left channel. Long story short, the pre-amp is bad but I haven't gone into it further.
Definitely look out for leaky/swolen capacitors and stretched or melted belts. Like some paintball detents, the rubber can de-polymerize and turn to goop over time. Luckily that hasn't happend to me but I've seen some gnarly ones online.👍 1 -
I bought an old technics cassette deck that had some problems this summer, but got a JVC that was in perfect working order. It's hit or miss, but some guys on Kijiji and Facebook marketplace regularly buy and fix all this stuff.
I flipped a few turntables this year as well. There's functional stuff out there.

This is a wild market....
Held an estate sale for a relative last year and got a dumb high offer on one he had.Comment

Vintage audio/video stuff is a fun thing to get in to. Mid 90's to just past the millennium is my favorite era. I sold the stuff at Circuit City back then.Comment
