    A shipping mystery

Ok, trying to figure this out in my head but failing. So my wife started using the vinted app to sell off some extra kid cloths mostly. I was poking around it and realized the shipping process are WAY low. Most stuff, vinted only charges like $2-4 fees on. Shipping is included in every sale. So if you post something for $20, you get $20 and the buyer pays like $23. You get sent a shipping label and you have to drop it off at a vinted drop off location (the last one was a computer repair shop so they are a little odd) but I don't understand the business model.

They have to be shipping the item and presumably paying the computer shop and then still turning a profit on that $3 . Forget the rest of it, I want to know how they are shipping something like a small padded envelope or something the size of a small flat rate box for under $3

Could be bulked out to a hub then sorted and bulked out to regions

Iirc at one point FedEx had a flat rate skid that was $200 to ship.

Sent a guy 300 prolites that way.

Thats a good idea Ecapnation. One thought I had was that maybe they are taking losses on all transactions to build user base. Once they have their recognizability and user base they can raise their prices. Similar to Netflix, disney+ and a whole slew of others.

Maybe, but if they are paying even $4 to ship each item which is still better than you and I would pay to ship something similar that means the buyer is only paying half roughly. A $2 loss on every transaction while still having overhead costs is really bad. If I was an investor I'd have a lot of worries about putting money into that

So idk, this seems really weird to me because I've done a fair bit of shipping and with my best ways of doing it to make it cheap I can't get anywhere close to that, best case I would expect to pay $6 or $7 for shipping the size of packages that are typical but $2-3 is pretty crazy while still assuming they are making a profit

I just asked Google the same question, basically it thinks that vinted makes money by charging sellers optional add ons. Pushing their results to the top or closet spotlights etc. So I guess there's some money there but yeah I just went and looked at a Google home on there, it's a $15 item with a $1.50 fee, so on that 1.50 vinted has to give me buyer protection, ship the item and turn a profit. It still seems pretty crazy to me.

They may also have a negotiated shipping contract with a shipping company that gives a hefty discount versus 1-off consumer purchases.

When I worked at an Amazon corporate office with a mailroom we would get like 60-80% off UPS retail rates.

Or their business plan is growth and to make it back later. Who knows really.

Sounds like the reverese facebook option.

Lay your markers over some jeans or a shirt and "disguise" it that way.
