Any HVAC Guys in here ?

I've got a Trane TUY100R9V4W4 furnace, that I just had the local HVAC guy come look at. He said the Inducer motor is on its way out and needs to be replaced. He quoted me over 1000 bucks for the part and replacement plus $119 travel charge.

Being kind of handy, after he left, I took the panels off and looked at the motor myself. It looks like a pretty simple installation, 4 bolts and a couple connectors.

If I do decide to do it myself is there anything I need to be aware of or is it as straight forward as it appears?

Not an expert, but looked over the shoulder of a couple AC folks over the years... You may want to double check if your HVAC has a capacitor attached after you shut down the unit. Might get quite a shock as you try and dismantle the thing and the capacitor still has life in it.

I might suggest getting a quote from elsewhere and save you the trouble.

Rule of thumb with capacitors is always keep a screwdriver handy. When you're about to go anywhere near them put the screwdriver across the terminals to discharge any electricity that might be left in there.

The job is pretty simple. Testing to see if your unit is functioning properly is where the skill comes in. Service calls aren’t cheap but that furnace can be the most dangerous thing in your house if you don’t fix it properly.

Inducer motors are generally not too hard to change just make sure that the plastic housing behind it isn't cracked in any way otherwise that's going to have to be replaced too. Make sure you shut off any power to the unit to prevent not only hurting yourself but also frying any electronics.

I replaced my blower motor last summer and it wasn't hard from a technical standpoint, but it was a giant pain in the ass to actually get everything out of the unit. I ended up having to disconnect most of the circuit board, along with several other bits to pull the squirrel cage out, and the pictures I took of the board pre-disassembly were not very good, so re-wiring did not go well. Luckily I have a friend that is an HVAC guy and he helped me hook everything back up correctly. If you can read a wiring diagram that step should be fairly simple if it is required.

Make sure you fully disconnect unit from electrical. Shut gas off if it’s gas in case. Take pictures through the process in case things get complicated
