I have decided to learn some CAD/CAM software, and while studying that, keep thinking about machines and products. I am open to more advice, but this seems to be the right way to start.

I'd recommend fusion 360. Should be free for hobby level and will allow you to get your feet wet with cad and cam. Pretty much one of the only systems that have it integrated and able to go back and forth when you realize you make a mistake.

They also have the machining package which opens up other features like multi tool posting, 4th axis stuff, in process probing and more.
