Pic from a few years ago, Bass out of the neighbors pond. First fish (ice fishing wise) that I caught jigging an artificial bait. Hoping I can get out on the Ice this year!

Hard water fishing is the best way to fish. My life changed a couple years ago and I went from having the majority of the winter off to working just about every waking hour so I haven't gone regularly in too long. There is something exhilarating about watching flags pop up while you sit around and shoot the breeze with friends.

Ice fishing aka "drinking rye on a lake" is loads of fun and if you are in the right place you can catch a ton of fish. I don't think most people realise you can charter a little hut with rods, bait everything for a reasonable price. It's hard to get out in the winter and this is a great way to spend a day or two every season. Where I am it's a lot of perch which is actually great eating.

Depending on which part of the St. Croix I might actually know a few of those guys. A few guys from work like to ice fish that river for Sturgeon of all things.
In this video where they set a new state record...
Here's a Sturgeon I caught on 2/9/19. The fish measured 78 x 29.5 and estimated 120lbs. The fish was caught on the St Croix River in Minnesota. Since I kn...
when they mention they have "backup coming with a 10" auger", the backup was actually the guys I know from work who happened to be on the ice when these guys sent out a distress call on Facebook since they couldn't fit their catch through their holes.

The past year or so, I've gotten stupid addicted to fishing after being away for 30 years (that is ominous to admit).
Spinning. Baitcasting. Western flyfishing. Tenkara (on the cheap). And now Ice fishing.
I've gone "ice fishing" twice this year, and caught nothing.
I've discovered a tool that gives depths of many bodies of water:
I'm going on Sunday to a local lake with a friend and his father-in-law. I hope to post some good catches.

The wife and I took the grandson to smith lake in Bonners ferry, Idaho and went twice first day we caught six nice firm trout making for a great dinner and the second day it was so windy and cold we only stayed about two hours and caught three...
interesting thing to note is that one hole was filled up with brine shrimp and that hole caught six fish...
Going tommorrow weather permitting...
always need some luck....
