    September 2024 BWCA Astrophotography Shots

Just got back from a BWCA trip with some buddies where I snagged these photos at night.

    Used a Nikon Z5 with a 20mm f1.8 lens.

Settings were generally right around 30 second exposure, 6400 iso, and f2.8 aperture.

These are great! Surprised you didn't get star trails at 30 seconds. I usually stick to 15. But results are what matters. Nice! I live too damn close to light pollution so I'd love to take a trip and do this

If anybody has the chance to take a trip into the BWCA I’d highly recommend it.

Early September was the perfect timing, at night it got down into the 30s which kept the bugs away, and by mid afternoon is was typically into the low 70s and we were able to swim each afternoon.

Ahh I love the BWCA! Do you live close to there? I went last year on an Ice fishing trip and think I'm going to make it an annual thing!

I’m about 5-hours South of the BWCA.

Prepping gear for an upcoming BWCA trip and realized I had a few more decent Astrophotography pictures.

Specifically the pictured lakes in this thread are part of the Lady Chain west of entry point #38. Grace Lake, Alton Lake, and Beth Lake. (These new ones are from Beth Lake)

Heading in further on this next trip, might be some potential to photograph some waterfalls.

I picked up a new iPhone 16 pro recently, partially for the emergency satellite texting.

Wild to think the camera on my phone has double the megapixels of my full size Nikon. Kind of leaves me wishing I had just coughed up the money for a Z7 instead.

Realistically I mostly just use the Nikon for astrophotography where it has the big advantage with the lens, then I just use my phone for everything else.
