I had a bagger on my old riding mower and it clogged constantly when doing your method and the bags were small and needed to be emptied often. Part of the clogging was related to the bag capacity. As soon as they were full the pipe would clog. When I got a new rider I skipped the bagger and opted for a tow behind sweeper. It doesn't clog, cleans better, and has a much bigger capacity. There is a rope connected to the hopper that you pull to lift and empty the hopper so I don't have to stop and get off the mower to empty the bags like on a bagger.

My neighbor has one of these. It’s pretty amazing in action but it’s also as big as a car and not free. I should consider it, I admit.

The bagger I have for my mower works pretty well if you know how to pace it. I’m not picking up leaves, I’m picking up (very) shredded leaves which don’t plug up that easily. It also has a power feed to help things along.
