I don’t remember these being prone to breakage. Did they get brittle with age? I honestly haven’t put hands on these since 1984 so I can’t recall but I thought the plastic was soft-ish.
A lot of "plasticizers" precipitate over time, so you get rubbery nodes and brittle bodies instead of a good, homogenous mix. Safe bet they're more brittle then when new, if not necessarily fragile.
The neoprene in the Apollo space suits is the prime example. Instead of being soft and rubbery, it's now a mix of powder and goo.
