    Smaller CO2 Tank Availability?

I'm getting back into things after a near-decade long hiatus, and for starters will be picking up an SL68 II off the forum. In the name of keeping things as small and light as I can, I started looking for a 9oz tank...does anyone make these anymore? Seems like everyone is out of stock or what they have is really old, and I'm not sure if hydro testing is worth it for them nor am I up to speed on current testing requirements. If I need to bump to a 12oz so be it, but I like the shoulder feel of the skinnier tanks (heck, I haven't seen a 7oz in a good long while either...). Thanks!

    -Mike
Edit/Thought after initial posting - Would the magfed/milsim stuff be putting more pressure on supply of these, or are they just obsolete/not in demand anymore?

Check Bacci Paintball's website. He has some 7oz tanks on there for sale. The nice part is they don't require hydro testing so they're still legal even though they are old.

As far as new production it appears 9oz steel or 12oz aluminum are your choices. I found a few options on Ebay as well as ANSgear.

I'll check those out! The other option I was considering was the Brass Eagle 9oz on ebay. Seller is in Parker, CO and I'm a hop, skip, and a jump away in Colorado Springs. If it doesn't need to be tested that might be a good option...

A while back, bed bath and beyond was selling small CO2 tanks for soda machines for dirt cheap. You needed to switch the valve to a paintball one though.

If I knew you needed a co2 bottle I'd have tossed one in the box with the SL. I've got a few 12s sitting around. Not many people ask for them these days though, so I never bothered trying to get rid of them.

Have you considered a 13cu/in HPA bottle? I have one & it works pretty well. It's a tad shorter than I'd like, but I'm also really tall/long-armed.

EDIT: Co2 simply isn't in demand anymore. HPA is way more consistent for most markers & it's easier to fill. HPA bottles have come down in price drastically over the years, so most people just go for HPA.

All good, glaman5266! I had a 17/3k a while back that was perfect for me. Small enough diameter to not feel bulky when shouldered, and a good comfy length. Too bad those are $100 now, not $50 like I remember . I did see those 26/3k tanks and might give it a thought. I just was under the impression the SL's were happier on co2, but if they run fine on HPA...

Edit - I was hoping to find a smaller tank to avoid those pesky hydro tests as well lol

As far as I know, the 13/3k & 17/3k bottles fit the 2 inch rule. Maybe someone else can confirm?

The SL you’re getting I’ve run on both gasses.

Pretty sure you're right! I seem to recall both the 13 and 17 I had were under 2" diameter

We use CO2 at our outlaw field all the time. I recently picked up an immaculate 7oz and since I generally don't use CO2 at pay-to-play fields I don't need it. I'll measure the diameter this week to make sure it falls under the 2" rule, but if you're interested in it it's yours.

Oh I think I have a 7 and a couple of 9s that I can measure for you.

If you're bored, feel free! I'd be curious to know if different brands have significant dimension differences...

I have a box of 9 oz tanks that I really want to be able to use but I just can't justify it. I have two 5 lb bulk CO2 tanks and it will cost me $75 to fill them. 10 lbs of CO2 is about 160 ounces. Comes out to about $4.50 per fill.

Admission and air costs $15 at my local field whether I bring my own CO2 or not.

IMO where CO2 makes sense is if you play outlaw. You get a lot more mileage out of a bulk CO2 tank than you would out of a scuba tank. I wish that was a problem I had.

According to their chart, Catalina is still making 4, 7, and 9oz tanks.

Where are you getting your tanks filled? I think I payed less than $30 to fill a 20lb at Airgas last time. Of course any price at all is more than “free” but you may be not doing this the cheapest way.

Those were the prices quoted to me at the airgas near me - the only such provider within 2 hrs.

filled or exchanged? That was the cost to exchange and they didn't want to just fill for me.
