    Hands-free chrono for pump tuning?

Is the big red expensive chronograph the only option? X Radars are relatively inexpensive but from what it looks like you can't just set it down and turn it on. Any other options?

The little yellow chronos have loops for velcro to strap it to your barrel.

Radarchron. I love mine and they’re reasonably priced new, ~$75. You can pick one up in the BST for less when they pop up.

It’ll turn off after a little while, but you can turn it back on while it’s strapped on. You also have to press the button to clear each shot manually.

I just prop up my X-Radar with a simple spring clamp holding the button down while tuning. Some day I will bend up a frame to mount my X-Radar with a permanent slide to activate the switch once propping and spring clip gets annoying.

How do you prop it up? The spring clamp idea is a good one!

Not at all the only option. Most sports, in fact, only use chronographs that are hands-free. Here's an example.

This. Check out shooting/reloading/archery shops for traditional non-handheld chronographs. I used my dad’s archery chrony for years playing at home.

Like these guys have said there are options out there. That said, I use a big red. Sometimes you can find deals on them. I got mine off eBay for $125 a few years ago, still going strong. Used my buddies xradar before that with a designated chrono-monkey in our outlaw group to hold the thing while we dialed in.

Is the prevalence of the big red chrono's at fields over some of the other options a matter of durability or is there something else to them also?

I think durability is a big selling point. I bought one off of Craistlist YEARS ago and it has been dropped many, many times and just keeping chugging.

Big red is almost entirely about durability, and in some cases it's used to encourage players to shoot more paint at the target range.

The funny thing is the electronics in big red are jank. I'd recommend anyone that buys one to get some acrylic conformal coat (brush on) and coat the bejesus out of the electronics (not the sensor tho).

Went with the little yellow Radarchron, found one like new for a good price with all the stock pieces. Surprised I haven't bought one of these until now actually. Portable and simple enough for my needs. Maybe one day I'll just get the Virtue Clock and a tripod but I just can't justify that cost right now.

Those yellow Radarchrons are great. Any issue, just change the battery and the keep on going. I’ve had the same one for over 10 years now.
