    Rental Guns: Testing and Cleaning

These questions go out to field owners, workers, volunteers or just anybody who knows:

    1. How do you clean a gun (inside and out) between customers? What would warrant a complete or partial disassembly/rebuild/cleaning (other than leaks, non functionality, etc).

    2. What kind of remedial action is taken when a gun is malfunctioning in the field? Do you ever field strip guns, or just try to solve the problem with it fully together?

    3. What testing is done prior to giving a gun to the customer to ensure functionality?

    Circa 2005:

    1) How: Same as anyone else. When: A problem presents or there's down time.

    2) Swap with a working one or fix it ASAP. Do you... Yes.

    3) None. Apparent problems will arise at the chrono station if somethings really wrong.

Most fields that I have been at, worked for or helped that are decent shops will wipe the paint off the guns and visually inspect it to be sure it looks normal. Our current field takes the tanks off the guns and hoppers are taken off. They store them all away for next use. That does help when the next group comes in because you have to look at the pieces you are putting together. You catch more problems that way. If there is a problem with equipment they take the gun apart as needed and fix it. Hoppers that are broken are thrown out. Tanks are fixed and replaced as needed.

One shop I worked for didn't take the guns apart ever. Those guns were a mess and had more serious problems. They didn't clean them off for a while before I started. It caused all the equipment to have major failures when it went bad.

Like siress said, swap out the gun for the customer. Don't make them wait for you to fix it. Take it back to the shop and fix it where you can do it without worrying about losing pieces and have tools.

Our field puts them together and dry fires once or twice to be sure it fires.

Most fields if they are using older gear like tippmans simply hose them off and allow to drip dry. Not much warrants a complete disassembly other than the obvious leaks etc. If someone comes to the gear shed complaining of a leak etc, in the interests of customer service, swap it and fix the issue later. Lastly in terms of testing other than taking the required number of guns out and giving them a quick chrono test not much.
