Weird cocker hammer

Well, I thought I’d seen about everything, but I was having what seemed like sear slippage and pulled out the hammer to find this dagger.



it looks like it’s that way on purpose, have you guys seen a lug like this? I haven’t checked out my sear yet, but with the cone shape and some significant wear on that cone I’m confident I found the culprit.

yeah those are a thing, seen em and tried em. the sear trips lighter but tends to slip when resetting.

Looks like a shocktech, they did/do put out lugs with different profiles like that.

Yup, just a cone shaped lug. Round and cone lugs are available regularly from Shocktech. (Not that this is necessarily a ST lug, other companies have made them too)
Cone lugs are recommended with their Gunfighter frames and I actually like them with some hinge frames.

Thanks for the responses! I guess it makes sense that it’s being used in conjunction with a gunfighter 1.5 frame. I bought someone else’s build, and I’m not used to all the higher end parts.

It’s weird though, everything was working great until this weekend when it started slipping. I tried to lower the lug but to get it to catch, but in doing so threw it far enough out of time that the back block just stocks back until I push the trigger back forward.

Im going to investigate the sear tomorrow, if that looks fine I’ll just adjust the 3 way a little.

Might be that you had turned the velocity up via the IVG and are now overpowering the sear spring.
The lug looks a little dirty in your picture. I would clean everything thoroughly and then reassemble. You could add a stronger sear spring if needed. (unless you have a gunfighter frame?)

I actually was trying to squeeze an extra 10 FPS out of it when I first noticed the problem, but it was intermittent.

Looking at these pics it’s kind of tough to see, but there is a flat spot on both the sear and the hammer that looks polished up and I’m pretty sure is wear, and likely the cause of the slippage. I’m going to rotate the sear and see if it goes away after work.

Yep, it’s crazy what changes were made for the sake of small improvement on these high end parts, but it all makes sense how it should work. In your experience is there a flat spot on the sear (as in the second picture) or is that more likely to be wear?

That looks like wear to me.
Is the marker very heavily used, or is it sprung hard?

Hammer lugs are inexpensive to order from ST. They are $4 each if you want to replace them.

That’s awesome to know, I’ll have to pick up a spare.

Overall condition on the gun is very good, not even really seeing wear from the bolt or pump arm. I’m guessing that means the springs are kind of heavy and I should go light while I’ve got everything pulled apart.

It doesn't mean anything. I wouldn't assume the person before you did it all wrong. If the springs that are in there are working well, they are probably well chosen and fine. If it feels terrible, then I would start messing with them.

Good advice Cunha. If you are not sure on the springing better to not mess with it. Especially if it was shooting well. I was only inquiring, not suggesting a change.

Going to send this to the top again so that if anyone runs into it in the future, they can know that the sear was worn out and rotating it resolved the issue.

with some more investigation I decided to stick with the spring, as it didn’t feel excessively strong. I’ll put a couple cases through it and recheck the sear for signs of wear. If it is, I’m gonna say the springs are too strong.
