    Automag question

I owned the Automag for a short time back in the 90's before it was stole with the rest of my gear. Very basic straight neck. Loved it.

Which model would you suggest for an old woods baller? I know a little bit about Autocockers but when you start talking about the evolution of the Automag I'm lost.

I've read that you need to run pressure over 1k If using HPA.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

If you're using a Classic valve, any standard HPA tank will run it just fine. If you're using an R/T valve or an X-valve, they tend to like higher input psi's. A Classic valve with a Level 10 bolt kit, an Autococker barrel adapter, combined with a Revvy hopper will suit any woodsballer well, in my opinion (not an expert).

Yeah Iโ€™d say classic valve for sure. I havenโ€™t had any issues with mag barrels and small paint, but I know they exist. LX is nice, but IMO not necessary.

I have bought a ton of mag parts in the last year to build markers and outfit a couple folks.

I sold Classic valve mags ranging from $125 to $300.

The truth is that every one of them shot great, and basically shot the same.

What do you want out of your mag? What features interest you? You want style, or just a shooter?

My one serious piece of advice is to use AGD bolts and on/offs and not muck around with the various aftermarket pieces. They were generally just not good.

I was not sure how the classic valves would do with HPA since I played with CO2 back then.

          Thanks for the information guys!

          Cheers

My goal is to have a simple basic Automag. A good shooter that I can play woodsball with. Nothing fancy.

paint is super small now, you'll probably want Doc Nickels adapter, so you can run cocker threaded barrels.

I'd compare a classic level 7 mag to a Tippmann or other decent blowback. It's pick up and play, requiring only only basic maintenance (clean the breach/bolt if needed, and oil in the asa) regularly to keep it running well. It has no anti chop features, so be easy on the trigger and/or use a fast loader to avoid chops.

A level 10/ult trigger automag I'd compare to a modern spool valve mech. They take a bit more tuning and frequency/complexity of maintenance, but will rip faster and have a far less risk of chopping. Add rt to that and you can keep up with electros. Obviously the efficiency story is something else, but is less important for rec woodsball.

Bodies and barrels are your call. I've had no problems running a twist lock barrel with either a wire detent or a plastic detent with a strip of tape over the actual nub (what I would recommend). Doc's adapters are good if you want a barrel kit, as is a ule type body if you prefer centre feed.

There's a nice level 7 classic mag for sale in the BST right now. I'd recommend that one. (No, it isn't my sale. Somebody needs to buy it before I do. Get that temptation away. I don't need another! Lol)

Mags are bullet proof. They're my absolute most favorite markers. I prefer classics over RT valves, and there's nothing wrong with lvl 7s.

If you're a cocker guy, pick up one of Doc's barrel adapters. They're really nice. I've been using the same one for 15 or 16 years now.

Is there a big consistency difference between the level 7 and the level 10? I know that the old old automag had issues of losing velocity. I never noticed this with mine because I didn't care back then. I'm not looking for a laser, just a fun shooter with decent consistency.

I have gone down the Google rabbit hole, but you were hitting spot on what I need to know. Thank you.

If you're using HPA I don't think you would experience shootdown in either L7 or LX.

Thanks Johnny. I'll be in the market for one soon. Definitely want one in my collection.

Yeah theyโ€™re really fun! Nothing screams woodsball like a classic valve mag, bonus points for wood grips.

I hear that. I have some rosewood smart parts grips that may go on it. That would be nice.

donโ€™t buy the cheapest mag you can find. Building it up to your specifications will cost you more in the long run. Try to find a gun that already has most of the parts you want.

Donโ€™t end up with a bunch of ratty ANS parts at the bottom of your tool box.
