    Gen 3 Micromag Double Feeding

Man ! glad to have MCB back and this Section especially. Well, let's get to it then!

Any of you guys have experience with Gen 2 Micromags double feeding? When I first picked up this gun , the PTP level detent was all gummed up / seized

I was able to take it apart and service it, and the detent has free motion now, the original spring seems fine, detent appears nice and snappy to me.

Was at my local field last weekend, and thought i wanted to take the Micromag out but it was consistently double feeding at the chrono station / target range.

The paint was very small , earlier that day I was having good success with a .679 insert in my freak barrel on my cocker in the morning.

On the micromag , I was just running a empire mini gs 12" barrel, so whatever that internal bore is i don't know, but the small paint rolls thru easily.

But that said the paintball sets up in behind the detent, well before where the cocker barrel seats in the breech, so I don't think that large bore barrel is the factor.

Will a freak barrel and small insert help on this gun? Again, the barrel seats far ahead of where the detent lives in the breech.

Or is it simply that today's paint is just too small for the old PTP detent design, and is going to be prone to sneaking a 2nd ball past the level detent? Do I have to wait for day where paint is a bit on larger side to use this gun?

It is likely today's paint is to small for the current detent.

    what hopper are you using?

Maybe. I did some more testing and the detent actually holds the very first ball quite well. I shook marker violently and could not get the ball to roll past the detent.

So i did a bunch of test shots with only 3 balls in the powerfeed.

9 times out of ten, it fires the first ball, and as the bolt retracts, the next two paintballs load. The first goes in the half inch area past detent but before the barrel. The second ball sets where is supposed to be behind the detent.

So maybe its worn detent or really is a weak detent spring

Chaos had some detente 3D printed to fit his (my) VMX. Maybe we could change the detent to extend in slightly more and that could catch the paint.

As Jim said it could need a longer tipped detent but it could also be a weak detent spring, try changing that first

Sounds like a gummed up detent to me as well. Disassemble, clean it good and well with some soap and water, then dry it out with IPA, and see if the problem persists.

Since consensus here its the spring, i’ll try that first , but if i rule that out do you have spare 3d printed detents for sale? Is it hard to print a slightly longer tipped version?

...and springs do wear out eventually so I'd fully disassemble the detent, clean it and consider putting in a new (stiffer) spring.

I did try one thing first, before replacing the spring. I used some aluminum foil tape (for sealing ducts) and built up the tip of the PTP detent to try to make it a tad longer , hard to tell but may have added a .50 to 1 mm of material by layering that foil tape, and pressing it into shape.

I broke a ball on my first shot, and thought ok, this didn't work, but i shot through it the next few shots were singles, not double feeds.

I was handloading so was shooting about 4 shots in a row each round, went through about 40 rounds and was not getting double feeds. i'll do a real test next time I am at a field, put more paint through, but I think that temporarily fixes it for now.

Who would I contact to see if more PTP detents could be printed with slight longer tip to protrude in a micromag gen 2 ? Did Chaos make them or have another 3d handy type whip them up?

So my attempt to add some material to the detente has failed. It did not take long for that foil tape to wear away and then the Micromag was double feeding again.

Took a look at the detente spring next as per your guys advice, and replacing the weak spring has fixed my double feeding issue!

A mechanical pencil had to die to provide me a larger, longer spring, but the sacrifice was worth it, as it's working great!

                        thanks again!
