Unported barrels.

I hate when paint gets clogged in the holes. It drips back into the barrel tip and if in not wrong it just makes the shot quieter right? Anybody have thoughts and experiences with these barrels. I may want to invest in one. I like loud markers anyway .

Have shot many unported barrels. In my experience the only difference is sound.

I know ads and stuff say it helps with barrel breaks by getting rid of excess air or whatever. I don't really think it does much besides a sound signature change. It might help a bit with barrel breaks but I doubt it. But then again I'm waaaaay to new to know, all my unported barrels are so huge I never get barrel breaks to begin with since tiny paint is absolutely everywhere.

I used to run a stub tip on my Freak. I loved it being loud as hell, plus the accuracy was basically the same with proper paint matching. Plus with the short barrel, any broken paint would all make its way out the end very quickly

They still suck just like a ported barrel if there's a barrel break, like the others said the only real difference is sound signature. I like short, loud barrels. A Armson pro might as well be considered unported, for all the good it's muzzle break does. However, to be realistic, having a loud sound signature does effect your game if your playing against good people. I'd call it as legitimate a handicap as a smaller loader. The regulars at my field, and the people in my group, are all good, and having them be able to pinpoint my general location before I even see where they are does not always work out well for me!

I try to run un-ported as much as possible ... easier to clean ... everything swab right out!
The sound is a bit louder, but not much louder than a 98 ...

Porting or not makes no difference on getting the barrel clean. The issue is that paintballs deform and bounce around the barrel on their way out - they don't scrape the barrel clean like a squeegee. Any discernible thickness of paint on the ID is going to catch the shell and cause it to spin as it passes by - if it doesn't just rip open due to the stress.

If you are talking about the barrel getting clean if you keep shooting, you are correct. But with a squeegee, paint and bits always remain in the porting which always makes a mess as said bits drip/fall back into he barrel shaft, this is a non-issue without porting.

Nope. That whole explosive expansion of gasses happening in the barrel tends to blow paint and stuff out of the ports, not back into the barrel.

this is a fringe issue. Really large porting can have this problem, or porting that has large openings for paint to accumulate on the outside - like the old teardrop barrels. Basically, the only way for the paint/shell to work its way back into the barrel is that it has to be heavy enough to overcome to the surface tension holding it in place. Small porting will easily hold the paint in place. Subsequent shots through the gun have a good chance of blowing most of the paint out of the porting if it's still hydrated. I guess there's some chance that an eddy current could pull paint back into the barrel, it just seems very unlikely.

I've broken a LOT of paint through the years shooting 99% ported barrels and it's never been an issue. Even without cleaning the barrel on the spot the paint will shoot out of the barrel and the ports clear pretty fast. My favorite barrel is the SP teardrop style barrels both the one piece and the freak tip. Even with the big scallops around the porting no paint ever runs back into the barrel. The shooting of the gun just doesn't allow it; all the paint is blown out. As a precaution I will always wipe down my barrel between games if it's gotten a bunch of paint on it but I've never had an issue with the porting.

Likewise I've never had issues with unported barrels but seeing as there's hardly any disadvantage to a ported barrel I use them unless the gun has a fixed barrel like one of my Sheridans. Another point is that some folks on here that really like unported barrels probably shoot pumps so you may have an extended time between shots to allow paint to get back into the barrel. My uses are speedball which means I'm shooting quite a lot and blowing that paint out.

Porting is funny. It definitely makes a gun SEEM easier to shoot when its not BLAM BLAM BLAM every shot.

You can probably order a deadlywind barrel with no porting. that would be cool.
