To Pump, Or Not To Pump

Gathering the last bits and pieces for my Shocktech Vortex, and I'm debating on how to build it.

I have 2 fields thay are close to me.

The closest one has a half-dozen fields ranging from woods-ball to speed-ball (with inflatables). They offer electro-markers for rent and as far as I can tell, they dont really have a ROF cap.

The other field is about 5 minutes further away, and is all woods-ball. They are a strick semi-auto only (even for electros), and have a ROF cap at 12 BPS (not sure how you can regulate that though on something like an old-school mech autococker).

I bought the gun as seen below, with the brand new Inception front end.

If I played at the closer field, the semi-auto would be a nice feature to have.

However, I kinda want to try pump, and it wouldnt put me at a huge disadvantage if I played at the woods-ball only field.

One other benefit to the pump, is that I'd obviously go through less paint, and wouldn't need to buy a huge expensive tank. A small 13/3000 would probably be plenty (both fields offer free unlimited air).

I know its not that difficult to swap it over, and I may end up just doing both at some point.

Any thoughts / advice would be much appreciated.

In my experience, you'll never really switch between the two. It's just such a hassle to unbolt the pump kit and then have to retime the gun everytime that you'll just end up leaving it as one or the other.

My opinion is clear and one sided, pump is the way. For new pump players you will always feel disadvantaged the first few times you play but then you will get into the groove of things and it will be just like shooting anything else.

I play pump on everything from airball fields against electros to the woods against rentals and it is still more about making smart moves and communicating with your team that what you are shooting.

On the plus side, pump is just so darn fun and it feels even better to take out someone who is shooting a shiny electronic thing.

All that being said, that is a pretty cocker you have there. I would keep it semi and pick up one of snipers up for sale right now.
"but we all have electros and you guys only have pumps, this wont be fair"

      (chuckling quietly) "we know"

Pump is fun. It's really up to you. One piece of advice: if you do pump it, save that matching front block!

Another thought; you're going to be outgunned with a mech cocker against electros anyway, in terms of ROF. Maybe try pump with an auto trigger

First off, that's a very good looking cocker...I love the fade. My opinion is keep it setup as mech. I agree with fullofpaint about constantly swapping back and forth. You've got nice pneumatics on there setup and ready to roll, it'd be a shame to take them off. If you're concerned about having too much gun on the woodsball field, you can take a small hopper like a Sportshot. 100 balls and not agitated, that could easily be outshot by an auto-triggered pump. The good news here is that you've got a chance to pickup something to fill your want for a pump marker. I'm sure there's something around these parts that would fit the bill.

I did look into the auto-trigger kit that Autococker Parts dot com offers, where it add an auto-trigger cam to any existing slider. Only issue is that I would have to drill out the existing hole behind the trigger, which I dont really want to do, and ruin the anodizing.

I think for now, I may just run the pneumatics, as i have them already, and I already invested in a Viewloader Revolution.

I do like the thought of the pump though, and i may change my mind, its not out of the question.

That is an awesome build. I’m with BigRed, leave it semi and use a smaller gravity fed hopper.

Not sure I would play pump w/o a really light trigger...CCMish. I love pump, once you get the hang of it, you won't go back. Snap shooting is key. Only shoot when necessary, others will not notice you shooting. It is really nice, play with it as a cocker. If you don't like it switch to pump.

That thing is too nice in its current form. If you want to play pump you're better off picking up a cheaper cocker or even a Trilogy and slapping a Slice kit on it. You can find out if you like it before dismantling this one.

On a side note, I've always wanted a Phantom with an under-cocking kit. If I want to try pump, I may just go that route

Vortex came as a semi, and should stay as a semi.
But pump is a ton of fun, grab one in the future. You will not regret it.

I am primarily a pump player. I have mech-semi and even own one electro but they get very little play time but that is way too nice of a looking build to pump it. Leave it alone and keep it working so when you feel like not pumping you will have a good mech to use. Personally I would just find a plain jane 2K+ RF Cocker/Sniper and pump that.

As many said before keep that sexy beast in one piece! Pick up a nice functional and cheap pump cocker for scratch that itch. You’ll be happy to have both.

I think most of us agree Don’t pull that marker apart. That’s a really nice cocker. Sure would make a nice pump but don’t do it. Keep it semi.

If you want to try pump get a pump. Buy a used pump in your budget. As long as you buy right if you find it’s not for you you could always sell it for what you got in it. They hold there value or even go up in value unlike electro markers. I suggest something with auto trigger especially for just getting into pump. It helps keep rhythm more then anything and You can always lean on it if you need it. Empire Sniper, Trilogy (w/Autockerparts pump kit), KP3, Phantom are all great budget pumps to get your feet wet. CCM is top of the line if you shoot one, your going to want one. But anything you buy you could sell down the road for what you pay for it if you find it’s not for you.

I say go for it I prefer shooting my pump over a semi especially rec play. I never feel outgunned with it anymore especially with an open class one (Hopper/ tank). Only time it gets to be a lil much is when you start stick feeding on the air all field against electo. I’m not against it, but it can be very challenging on that type of field handicapping yourself that much. Especially if the electo players are decent players.

In the woods it don’t matter I like playing against paint hosers. You always know exactly ware they are just connect the dots. It’s the sneaky ones you got to watch out for in the woods.
