Feednecks

Talk to me about feednecks. Clamping ones in-particular.

Are some better than others? Certain brands to steer-clear of?

Hopefully picking up a new marker (well, new to me) with what looks like a Q-Lock feedneck.

I can get a Nummech feed-neck "stub" for this gun to convert it to the empire collar style, opening up the options to newer feednecks. Other option would be to find a replacement locking feedneck on the-bay, but options are limited.

If I am adding a feedneck to a marker that does not have one I always choose a stub and lock style a la Eclipse or Inception. They are sturdy, easy to use, and clamp well. Also not too pricey.

If it already has a good working clamping feedneck I would not bother to change it.

That makes the most sense to me. I've not had occasion to replace any feednecks yet, but I think I'd rather install an Empire/Eclipse style feedneck boss (stub) once and then be able to swap feednecks with an Allen key than deal with unscrewing something with Loctite on the threads every time.

The current generation of clamping feednecks, particularly the double clamping ones, all seem to be pretty similar. They all offer fine adjustment on the side opposite the lever. Some with thumbscrews and others requiring hex keys, but either way you can adjust them in less than a full turn increments. In contrast, the older generation DYE/Proto lockdown feednecks had the screw threaded into a blind hole tapped into the clamping collar, so the only way to adjust them was by turning the lever while open. That restricted adjustments to full turns, since you had to return the lever to the level position in order to clamp. I imagine that's why they went with a #6-40 screw. So don't go buying second-hand feednecks off 2011 Proto Rails, okay? Not that you were likely to in the first place.

But seriously, as I commented to Hellion, I think you're better off in the long run installing an Empire-style feedneck boss and picking whatever Empire or Eclipse style double clamping feedneck you like. That way if you damage or break it, or just decide you want a different feedneck, you aren't having to remove anything with Loctited threads.

Also, I think I'd rather have a feedneck that serves as a weak point which will either break or pop off before transferring enough stress to the marker body to damage it or the frame. Depending on your playstyle, that may or may not be a worthwhile concern.

Depending on the marker it may be better to have it milled than install a nummech boss.

I will also say not all of the new style feednecks are the same. Dye, PE, meteor and maybe a few others have the groove for the feedneck set at a different height. While empire, inception, nummech, sconi and maybe 1 or 2 others have the groove located at the bottom.

Depending on the marker, the milling etc. you may be able to get away with a nummech stub for the other ones, but at the risk of it not threading in all the way.

I have a Nummech threaded stub with an ID feedneck on a Matrix. Both work well together, but my only complaint is the height of the neck - it only covers about half to 2/3 of a Revvy neck, so it's a little bit wobbly unless I've got it clamped really tightly.
