    Large Freak Insert Sizes

Was going through some of the used barrel items at my local shop, and they had a whole bunch of old aluminum freak inserts. Most of them were ones I already had, but a couple caught my eye.

I had seen .693's before (and have one), but they also had .695's, and even .697's.

Was paint really that big at one point?

I assume these don't really have a use now. Still funny to see though.

It would be cool to widget a really big one.

You used to be able to get some large paint over .69

But a lot of people preferred overboring so they would use a freak barrel on their open bolt guns with a big insert.

I have been playing since 91 and have never used Freak inserts that large.i don’t understand why they still sell the larger bores when I’m flirting with .685 sometimes. If this continues we’ll all be looking for smaller than what’s on the market. You would think the molds would make larger ball from wear and not smaller, but hey everything is shrinking these days, lol.

It's a conspiracy! It's plan two for getting us all into .50 cal. Reduce the ball size by .001 each year. This one is the long play, but we're falling for it!

        How isn't it obvious?

Larger bore helps you get more miller light through your barrel-bong and into your gut

If you heat up a SS .697 enough (dark cherry red), you can put an aluminum .682 inside and when they shrink down, you have a .661. (Just gotta pull the o-rings from your Freak back so it'll still slide in.) That's mostly what I shoot around here.

Cool thing is, with the tiny paint, I can get around 53 shots per 12g on my Illusion. And get about 14 in the stock feed.

Only time I ever used large bore barrels in those sizes was when it was raining all day and the paint would swell slightly. Then it was worth all the trouble carrying it in my bag. If it was really humid, I would also make sure I checked my paint and sometimes would have to change sizes up. Remember playing in one tournament in MI where it went from freezing rain to snow and I was glad I had a .695 Armson barrel. Stuff would come out like confetti till I changed, then it started swelling in the power feed necks, that was a real mess that day. Paint swelling in the tubes, paint swelling in your loader. No fun was experienced.
