    ASP TPC vs CCI TPC

Hello folks! Quick question for y'all.. what are the advantages and disadvantages of a ASP TPC compared to a standard CCI TPC?

    Thanks as always <3

The advantage is that it should open up the flow direct through the powertube to the ball, meaning you can potentially use less air to do equal work.

The disadvantage is that the CCI powertube not only makes the gun quieter, it also allows for significant velocity adjustment because when you screw the TPC you are not only changing spring tension but also the port size in the TPC (changing flow and spring tension) while with the ASP drilled out TPC you are just changing spring tension only.

So you get a lot less velocity adjustment from the same spring rate.

I've always found that I can get 30 shots at whatever velocity I want from a 12 gram with the CCI which meets my needs. Maybe with the ASP you can get 40 shots at 280fps reliably so could allow that extra tube full of shots before changing 12ies. Not sure though, I haven't played around with one enough.

Thank you Cunha, that was a wonderful breakdown. Was your experience with the typical "silver" phantom springs with both setups?

I believe the open style was supposed to allow a more direct flow of air. This could be helpful for getting a little more velocity out of a short barreled gun, which is why I've held onto one, or maybe to run at a lower pressure (I could be mis-remembering).

The biggest con I have experience with is it being rougher on paint. Had an open TPC in my Retro 7 and had a lot of paint chopping. Threw a CCI version in there and it cut it down significantly. I did have to use a stiffer spring but not enough to notice that much in game.

There are probably arguments to be made about the ability to adjust with an hex key instead of the flat head, but having the adjuster in my gun bag doesn't really bother me all that much for how infrequently I have to deal with it.

Overshadowed by the chopping in my instance, to the point I gave up after a few 12grams so it was hard to estimate efficiency. I don't think it would have been enough of a difference to justify the risk of the chopping.

should have no effect on chops though an increase is barrel breaks does seem to be noted.

k_obeastly Chopping in this instance being "blasted by a burst of air in a centralized location and causing the ball to break before it really gets into the barrel", not "ball is being physically chopped by the bolt or TPC".

Anecdotally open-faced TPCs are a good deal rougher on paint, like Handy was saying. Any Nelson I've had with an open-face has broken significantly more paint than one with an impeded-face. I haven't noticed a big difference in efficiency either way.

Interesting! I picked up an ASP TPC off ebay for the same price as a CCI TPC. I figured what the hell, why not! It seems like it may end up staying in the parts bin tho.

Open face will give you a lil boost in efficiency at the cost of being harder on paint. I personally prefer the Stock CCI TPC because my phantoms are setup for SC and I want to shoot brittle paint and not worry about breaking it. Often you only get one shot and I want it to count. The small difference in efficiency gained can be made up but shooting slower or chronoing down a lil. I run mine around 280 fps even if the field allows 300. I find most all fields have a 280-300fps limit so by keeping it at 280 it shoots constant regardless of what field I play at.

Clean, lightly oiled, good paint to bore match, stock silver springs, I run HPA on the same setup with bottle reg pressure of 825psi I have found the silver springs sweet spot around 800-850. Never having to swap springs is a nice way to set them up. Phantoms are very Set em ad forget em markers. Clean them when you notice performance start to degrade. Completely stock phantoms setup right will shoot 40+ Shots to a 12g more with quality 12g no problem as long as you use a 12-14” barrel and don’t over shoot the 12g. Especially at 280fps and above 65*.
