freedummy detent orientation

I still have a couple of the freedummy cocker fingers. Please remind me which end goes towards bolt! I remember the "glossy" side should face the bolt, I think, but both sides look like they could be glossy. Last time I tried one, it got all shoved sideways into the barrel which tells me I probably had it set wrong.

So it looks like the "flat" side faces the bolt, "lip" faces barrel

I think the second picture side should be facing the bolt. I don't think it makes a huge difference though, it's more wear and tear.

This is correct I believe. At least it’s how I use them, and I’m 90% sure that was based on reading freedummy’s original instructions. “Lip” side toward bolt, “flat” side toward barrel. Like you said I think it’s mostly just due to wear and tear.

Another unexpectedly awesome thing about them is that because they act as a sort of bushing between the barrel and receiver, I’ve found that with certain cocker barrels (due to the fine threading), having that cushion for the barrel to thread up against really strengthens the lockup. Especially evident on barrels that don’t have o-rings above the threads.

The side on the free dummy doesn’t really matter though he suggested the gloss side facing the breech and the rougher side facing the front of the barrel, he had no evidence to support if it was actually more durable that way.

I’ve never seen one wear out. They get lost and sometimes smashed when you take em out of the barrel but never seen one shot out yet.

on yours it would be the side that is more flush with the ring portion towards the bolt.

You should make sure the detent is pressed by the barrel. Some breech-barrel combinations may have a gap or just vibrate loose easily. The barrel pinches the detent against the breech face to hold it in.

You can measure it with calipers, or reach in there with a pick and feel around.

When you 3d print the gloss side is the one on the bed of the printer. There is no step on this side and it is completely flat.
