    Freak bore anodized barrel?

I've got a couple aluminum barrels I'd like to have Freak bored that I do not want to reanodize (old CCI colors). Does this cause a problem since the inside of the bored out area is, in effect, raw?

    Thanks...

With reasonable care not a big issue. Anodizing does harden the surface a little so helps with wear so given it is inside and you are using inserts it should be reasonably well protected. I keep an insert in my freak bored barrels that are raw just to be on the safe side. If you add a little paste wax to the raw aluminum the inserts slide in and out easily and the wax provides a little protection.

I have a CCI ano'd barrel that was freak bored, so raw inside, and I havent had any issues yet.

Same. And I use SS freak inserts. SS and aluminum tend toward galvanic corrosion, which I've seen once when I forgot to clean and dry the insert before putting it away for a year or more. It was a little seized, which I broke by twisting the insert and then managed to pull it out.

The biggest issue with boring old phantom barrels in particular is that the oring groove leaves that section precariously thin.

You could have the threads cut off rethreaded and then bored without the oring groove. I have a phantom Dye UL that was done like this and it’s one of my favorite Phantom barrels. The threads and the freak bore is raw but it’s never given me a problem.

Chuck, that's what I wound up doing after a buddies barrel snapped after a core sample.

i had one that snapped on me when i fell in the dirt... the threads were stuck in the body, had to get a new barrel after that
