Why would you need both of these on a Sheridan ,and how does the Palmers detent help? Thanks

The "wedgit" is to hold the ball in place inside the barrel, with the marker's bolt closed and ready to fire. The name is a clue to it's purpose - it wedges the ball in place so it doesn't roll out the barrel.
The detent prevents double feeds during the pump stroke - if you're running a springfeed or have a gravity feed setup like a hopper or stick feed. The standard "rock back" setup on a stock class Sheridan or PPS doesn't generally need one, from my experience.
