Is a detent necessary on a sniper

Very early slab bodies were without detents. In pump form, is this needed?

No. With a decent bore match you are more than likely good.

If you are a slow pumper and tip down you can double feed though. Just need to be aware of it in general.

This is where I was going to go with this one. Only value I can think of is preventing double feeds or maybe doing of a second ball.

Yeah. I have one set up SC with no stock. Played with it all day, no double feeds, no issues. Let someone try it at the end of day... Immediate double feed. So it is certainly not necessary, but makes it more idiot proof.

If you point the barrel up a tad when you pump, gravity will hold the ball against the bolt face, preventing double feeds. So you don’t need one. But like lower tubes threaded for ivg’s and bodies drilled for lug adjustment holes, detents are a quality of life upgrade. Ball detent and anti-rollout fingers with a slightly oversize barrel make cockers relatively idiot proof in my opinion, or at the very least convenient

I don't trust myself to do things so I strongly prefer having some form of detent.
