To use FSRs optimally, is it okay to just change out the breach? I noticed the long range kit contains more than the breach, but have also seen the breach available by itself for purchase.

If I remember right the stock magazines won't accept FS either.
Beyond that the tipx typically has velocity issues but that's not specific to FS but it can help

I haven't purchased or used a FS capable breach on a TiPX. However, if I were to buy one, I think I'd go with the Gen 2 Lok Bolt from MCSUS.com. It helps prevent chops and is FS capable. Note that it specifically says not to use the Tippmann Long Range Bolt though, just the stock bolt.

MagfedRanchPaintball on youtube has some videos on the TiPX and various FS breaches, including one on the Tippmann Long Range kit. You might want to watch those.
I'd also get a FS capable barrel. I do have experience with smooth bore vs rifled with FS, and the rifling does help. Personally, I'd go with the Hammerhead from MCSUS.com meant for the TiPX, unless you want something longer. Again, MagfedRanchPaintball has a video on this.

I've used a few breach on the TIPX, and the one that worked the best is the stock one I milled for FRS with the stock 7rd modded for FSR ...
In term of barrel, the stock one sucks, but I had great results with the short LionClaw (not as good as the hammerhead, but a lot cheaper ...)
The "long range bolt" didn't do much ... If anything ...
Keep in mind you'll never match the SSR or carmatech with the TIPX, but you'll get much better than anything in roundball 👍Love my brass ... Love my SSR ... Hard choices ...

The Tippmann long range kit is essentially a TCR breech and bolt with a Trufeed mag and some extra parts. The first TiPX I got has the LRK and it works very well. Curiously, the TCR breech is no longer available by itself. I think that is probably intentional by Tippmann so we have to buy their $100 kit instead of $40-50 in parts. The LRK breech is also anodized now which is nice for improving corrosion and wear resistance. Mag Fed Ranch didn't have a high opinion of the Mastersconi breech and made the same observations I did before opting to not buy it.
The second TiPX I got recently was totally stock and I opted to try milling the breech myself.
Tippmannparts.com has a video showing the differences between TiPX and TCR valves and spools.Late '80s PGP, late '90s Spyder, two A-5s, a 98 Custom, and a TiPX.

I just changed the breech on mine and it worked fine.
My brother ran the mcs lok bolt in his tipx. The latch that is supposed to stop chops broke and gouged his bolt. Mcs replaced it after some arguing over email.
I didn't install it so idk if it's user error or a design flaw but i would recommend not dealing with the lok bolt.

I'll add that you only need the breech. The stock bolt has enough of a taper that it feeds FSR reliably. I have the Lok-Bolt in mine, stock everything else, running Zeta mags and a Hammerhead rifle barrel, and it's probably my most reliable FSR shooter. I can't even remember the last time I had one flip.
