Help me decide on a new big boy pack

    Hey folks,

I play almost exclusively limited paint. The only full size pack I have is an ancient Redz dimension and it jostles all over the place like crazy. My only other harness is for 50 round pods.

My dilemma is I have a mech tournament later this year, and as much as I like to think I could rock the 50rd harness, I don't think that's realistic. So, it's time for a new full size harness. I am completely ignorant of what's out there, and would love to hear opinions/experience. Please note I am not a hardcore tourney guy and I don't think I'll be playing more than 1 or 2 local ones a year, so I need or want anything top of the line or excessively pricy.

Most of these are "Top of the line" but if you are gonna bother, get something that works, also they are all strapless packs as that's what I've been trying out.

The CRBN SC is pricy, but you can find them used in good shape for $60-80. Pods do not move, they are barely noticeable. I like the one with the flappy pod bits, it is impossible to repod in game, but in a tournament that is not a problem.

The Pro DNA packs are super tight to the body, but the pad is small for some people, it also has excellent retention and does not move even when loaded. Again, look for used.

The Virtue breakout is close to both of these in style and comfort, with a lower price tag.

Just my opinion after getting back in and trying some newer stuff out.

Cool, thank you for the input. I don't quite understand strapless, is it just that you don't have the velcro enclosure over the pod? What if the pod top opens?

Yes, I use lock lids so my errors are user induced. Stuff ive run into, underloaded standard pods bouncing enough to open. pods popping open when my heel catches the lid, either kneeling or gunfighting, and being shot and it opening a pod.(was out anyways)

I've run several different strapless packs and you don't drop paint as much as you think you would. I use the Bunkerking ESC pods and they are filled tight. But even so, I haven't had issues with paint dropping from open lids. Now a whole pod falling out of the ends because the tension was tight enough, has happened to me more than once. I have one where the whole pod will fall out almost every other game if I don't re-tighten the holder. I prefer the strapped packs for simplicity. Plus the strapless hold the pods tighter and I find they can be more difficult to get out in a hurry. They hold tight to keep them in but it makes getting them out more difficult, especially if you are in a tight space. The strap packs have elastic to eject them out which is normally easier. But the strapless packs do work ok.

I have the Twister editions from Committed Paintball of these, but they're the same design. These things can fit TIGHT. They won't move or bounce when running. With the 6 straps, there's nothing better that I have tried. I have owned all kinds and nothing compares to them. Plus, they're not too expensive. I have bruised my hip by having these on so tight and my jersey bunched up under it. I wouldn't suggest wearing it that tight but it works great. I bought the 4+ version and was so impressed I bought the 5+ as well. I normally wear the 4+ but I wanted the larger one in case I played somewhere I wanted to carry more paint.

I have a Dye attack pack, circa '09, i can sell you. Bought it unused from someone locally (was still on the cardboard hangy thing), and I continued the tradition by also not using it, lol.

Try to go used, and the GI Sportz Glide pack is excellent and can be found used for a good price. Comes in 3, 4, 5 main pod. I use an Exalt 4+ whatever harness which for some reason are hard to find but I love it. 2nd choice would easily be the GI one, or any other well made strapped pack.

I still prefer packs with straps. It's easier to slide empty pods back in. Strapless packs pod holders I've found are always too tight, which I get it - you don't want pods flying out - but the ones I've tried are annoyingly tight, plus aren't designed to let you just slide pods back in yourself while on the field. Have to take it off or have someone else load them for you. No thanks.

The CRBN pack seems to be the most popular today buy it's pricey. Another popular strapless option is the Bunkerkings pack. They are actually on sale right now too (still expensive, but most packs seem to be today). I have one of these and the pods def aren't going to slip out. It actually had to be broken in to allow the pods to easy slide out and be put back in. It's insanely comfortable and quicker than strapped packs.

Id personally use a strapless on speedball fields and a strapped for scenarios and big games. As has already been mentioned, strapped are easier to put the pod back in the pack, not a big deal to drop the pod in a speed ball field but a scenario is a different. Contract Killers and Dye makes some nice strapped packs.

Thanks for all the input so far fellas. I am strongly inclined to go with a strapped pack, I'm clumsy

I prefer strapped packs as well. However I have an HK strapless that lets you adjust the tension on each pod individually that works amazing. You’re welcome to try it.

I run 140s without issues but you do want to make sure they are good condition pods.

The Dye lock lids are garbage and expensive. They stretch out packs so standard pods don’t fit. They over full standard hoppers and hardly ever stay closed with very little use. The only thing I find them useful for is modifying small 50 round hoppers. You hardly ever see people run them in competitive play. We always just grabbed a case of 140 pods at the event and split them up after the event.

I do mostly rec ball and I love my kenetic pack so far. I do admit that it does end op on the table a lot because I have been running pump a lot lately

My old Redz pack had straps that had gotten to the point that they were useless pieces of overstreched fabric.
I ended up getting a set of suspenders off Amazon.
I used them for a game in April and I can't believe the difference.
So much more comfortable and I didn't notice the weight as much.
                  My back was so thankful.

I replaced my old redz belt with a new old stock 32 degrees belt for like 10 bucks from discount paintball. Feels like brand new again.

Sounds like I should invest in a new belt in addition !
