Pump 'Roll-Out' Issue...got any ideas? (SL-68 II Rentals)

Our Tippmann SL-68 II's had too many roll-outs last weekend (Economy Package where all paintball included).

I want the kids to have a GREAT 5-Star experience to grow our sport...roll-outs break my heart (I know, IMA nerd, oh well)

Got any ideas?

1) Nail polish (tri application like the Palmer ''Wedgits" configuration is hit and miss.

2) The Dealer thread on this site has 'Autococker Ball Detents' but I am concerned about the 'ramped' barrels.

3) One idea was having 3 slits cut into barrel then installing an o-ring but I'm concerned that the o-ring may not allow barrel in receiver.

4) ASP has a similar 2-holes drilled & 2 small o-rings detent concept

I have about 80 barrels that need to be serviced (economics is also a concern, obviously)

KNOW ANYONE who has an SL-68 II for sale? I'm interested.

My Sl682 runs great on a deadlywind freak xl, but for 80 barrels that isn’t a great solution.

I’ve always hated the nail polish suggestions bc I’ve never been able to get nail polish to actually stick to a barrel no matter how clean the surface is.

ASP mod isn’t just drilled IIRC, it’s cnc’d to get the right shape so that might be tough.

Honestly the best solution might be electric tape detents.
It’s not ideal but once you learn how the gun likes it, they work pretty well.

Not all nail polish is created equal. I have found there are certain brands and styles that harden for wedgits better than others. Great call on the tape detents, I forgot about those.

I think in terms of economics the nail polish detent mod makes the most sense. It'll take time to apply all the polish layers, but it would certainly be the most cost-effective. Due to the design of SL-68 barrels I think you'll struggle with finger detents. ASP-mod style detents are great in theory, but that's a lot of machining time and effort.

Edit: Do what Jsc5150 said. Tape detents are good solution here I bet.

I just checked if the Autococker finger detent would work and no go. The detent gets stuck on the front of the bolt since there's nothing to hold it in place.

The SL-68 is a tough one for rollouts because the breech is part of the barrel. Maybe some actual Wedgits could be applied to the barrel? Idk if that'd work with aluminum. I've only seen ones done on brass.

I modernized a small fleet of SL-68 IIs a few years ago and a ring of 3-4 nail polish stripes was the best method I found of preventing rollouts. These usually took 5-6 thin layers to get thick enough, and need to cure overnight. The only hitch is that because the SL-68's bolt protrudes further into the breech than on most guns you can't paint the nail polish stripes all the way to the rim of the barrel- they needed to start a good quarter of an inch in or so, or else the bolt and its O-ring would get stuck or peel up the detents. I chambered a ball when the gun had no gas and used a dowel to mark where the right spot to start the rear of the stripes would be.

Why not widget the barrels? Once you got the measurements figured out on the first few it would probably be a breeze from there

Wedgits sound like a neat idea.
I machined an Emek detent into mine.

Make some home brew freak barrels using some Kingman Hammer/Early Spyder brass lined barrels. All you'd need to do to make those work on an SL68 is have the threads milled off the barrels, Heat them up and remove the brass liner. Cut the brass the length of a Freak insert ,then using epoxy reglue the remaining brass in the barrel. Now you have made a freak barrel for an SL68. Recommend placing a piece of think tape inside the area when the insert goes or put a small dent/wedgie in that area to help keep the freak insert in place during use.
I did this to an SL68II that I had and it worked very well
