So for the last 25 years I've always used work boots for playing paint. Its time to replace them.

Whats a good cleat with ankle support?

Some of the fields i play (AG & OSG) can also be rocky so slipping is a issue to.

Lacrosse or football cleats. I wear old work shoes with ankle support. I’ve been hesitant to make the jump into cleats, it’s kinda for airball turf fields, I find light duty hiking shoes with ankle support to be more valuable because of waterproofing and support that cleats lack. Cleats are meant to be played in for a few hours tops and taken off.

I'm not a fan of cleats for any paintball that is not on a manicured speedball field. Out in the woods, they can grab too well sometimes, and you risk breaking an ankle or hyperextending a knee. They are also slippery, making them hazardous on any hard surface. I am a big fan of the more modern hiking boot/sneakers for their overall flexibility in terrain like Daltech post above. I wear Merrell's Moab 2 and have used them for years.



Now, if you are playing just speedball on good turf, then sure, go for some cleats. In the past, I used high-top football cleats (Nike), but that was 20+ years ago, so my input now is suspect.

I have seen cleats go poorly for lower joints. Very poorly. If you're not 22 and athletic...

I wear Altra trail running boots. They're grippy/ knobby without "biting". Lone Peak Mid 2, currently.

I wear Solomon Speedcross trail running shoes. I bought last model (Speedcross 5) on ebay new and for much less. Ive been running the same pair for 3 years. Great for woods, and I can go play some speedball on turf no issues. They have cross country style molded cleats on the bottom. More versatile than boots, and they are goretex.

I need ankle support too, so I weat ASO lace up wrap braces with them and I feel great.

I've been using Rocky "water-resistant" boots for my woods/paintball footwear.... Lightweight and not too expensive.

Sounds like general consensus is a pair of hiking boots is probably best. Especially where a decent amount of my play is woods.

Nike trail runners if playing woods or soccer turf cleats for astroturf

Under Armor baseball turf cleats. I swear by them. Super durable, fantastic grip on wet deadfall / paint covers rocks and still get superior grip on paint covered turf when we play indoor. The grip wraps around the toe box to for pushing up the snake on the Xball field. I think they even come in mid / high top. They are super comfortable as well.
“Under Armor Yard Turf Baseball Shoes” are the ones I use.



Trail runners are lighter more expensive and less durable but work really well.

I use the same shoes. Trail running shoes typically have some "lugs" like cleats but they are made of rubber instead of plastic. If you find a log or rock they have a much lower chance of slipping off like dedicated cleats will

I'm 39 and I don't think I've ever rolled an ankle while playing. Not that I can remember anyway, so yeah, highly recommend trail running shoes

I had the 3s the 4s and 5s. They only lasted about one session for me. The paint ate the glue that hold the sole on. They did work amazing but didn’t hold up for me. I think the
4s may have been knock offs because I got them super cheap. I ended up going back to the rubber turf cleats because they last 3-4 seasons vs 1

I love my Under Armour football high top cleats. I have a pair with smaller plastic knobs and a pair with rubber knobs and some more eva cushioning. Super comfortable and light. I feel very supported in the ankle too. I love how light they are. I used to wear heavier boots and pulled my hamstring on a break. These modern cleats are so trim and light you don't feel encumbered at all.

I'm another one for hiking shoes, I think I just went onto Bass Pro Shop and got a pair off clearence. They have been great, with nice deep tread they can dig in and also handle the rocks and sticks easier. They also have a water resistent inside which is nice.
