Anyone have experience with scba tanks?

So I managed to score this scba tank for free today but I know almost nothing about these. If the hydro times are the same as paintball it's still in hydro from the born date.

    Excited child for scale

Yes. Clearly more exciting than my tank so I don't blame her

So, are the tank threads the same as paintball reg threads?

Also, a cursory search of the interweb using the Google machine suggests that they have the same 15 year max life. And those tanks are price AF. Nice score!

I dug up the same info. 5 year hydro schedule, 15 year life

No idea what the neck threads are

Fill adapters are one of two designs, yoke or DIN if memory serves. That one looks DIN to my very rusty memory.

I have a local shop that tops off my (likely expired by now) SCBA tank, then I can top off HPA bottles a few dozen times.

Hydro is the same process; they will need a visual of the interior before filling for breathing air, but you can put a big sticker on it "not for breathing use" and they waive the visual.

              That's what I remember.

Oh... and treat it like a live grenade when full. There's an absurd amount of energy inside, so store it carefully where it cannot possibly get knocked over in such a way as to break off the valve.

I'm leaning towards selling it. With the backpack and regulators it's worth a chunk it looks like.

It's a 550/4500 if anyone needs to get a tank for a shoebox shocker

Saw a guy use one about that size at an outlaw field. Mounted to his back with remote line. He was pretty much good for the whole day.

I have a couple of aluminum scuba tanks I used for outlaw games back in the day. Now they mostly serve as an air source for tinkering at home. I don't know what fill adapters for the DIN tanks cost, I've never seen one. The "yoke" style adapters that fit the K valve tanks can be found reasonably priced. I recently picked up a second one from a member here for not a lot of cash. Unless you want to strap it to your back, I'd sell it and use the funds for something more paintball friendly.

On second thought... you should keep it and find a Maxxloader to use with it....

Yeah I'm leaning towards selling it. I already have 3 scuba tanks at home and the only thing this has that they don't is the 4500psi Max pressure. Besides that I would need to find a decent way to stand it up, pay for another tank that needs hydro and vis and figure out a separate fill adaptor

That is not a DIN valve. I can tell you that for sure, since DIN is the standard in Europe, and I own several scuba tanks with DIN valves.

I have never seen that kind of valve before, and I have been diving across the globe, I have been using firefighters' gear, I have been using medical oxygen, etc, etc.

I would hazard to guess that whatever it is, it is a native valve to the U.S. So it may very well be either super easy to get a valve for in the U.S, or vice versa - incredibly rare.

I found out what the threads in the neck are, I'd have to look it up again but it's not standard scuba or paintball. Not impossible to get a yolk or din valve for though but one more thing I would need to replace if I kept it

You need a CGA347 Male adapter to take your SCBA valve output to build a paintball fill rig. Not a huge deal to cobble together. I was using one for a while until it ran out of life, but now I have a compressor, so I have not picked one up again, though I have thought about it.

Here is an example that is made to go from CGA347 Male to paintball (not what I have I built mine) https://www.safeairsystems.com/91-SCBA-PB-CGA347-SCBA-Male-to-Paintball-QC-Fill-Adapter

This is not a scuba tank ... 🙄
Its a haz-mat life support tank.

I wouldn't fill it or even try to re-hydro, they have incredibly thin aluminum layers to save on wait

They are considerably tougher than you might think; they are used by firefighters in actual fires, and we all know the environment and personnel are not particularly gentle on any gear. I would not hesitate, and in fact did not hesitate, to use one for several years as an HPA source. They are handled just like our paintball tanks with similar inspection/testing requirements. Nothing to be scared of, given reasonable care and proper testing.

granted this was 2 decades ago, but my tank hydro facility did not attempt re-hydro of life support tanks after 5 years because they had too much failures, im glad this is not the case anymore.
