De-gas every time?

Who de-gasses their cf tanks every time and if not how long do you feel comfortable keeping pressure in them?

I do the opposite and make sure theyre all filled before I leave the field. That way I have air for tech work later.

Unless you’re flying home. Leave gas. I’ve also heard leaving the valves without pressure is bad for the valve but that was when nobody knew what they were talking about and there was no google. So, always fill.

I was told to always leave them filled. The pressure will keep out moisture. I was told this by a paintballer that was also a scallop diver, who said the same thing goes for scuba tanks.

I put 10k psi in my tanks to make extra sure there is no humidity getting in, just flex seal the bust disks first.😎

I was talking to the local scuba guy (while hetting a tank hydroed) about how some scuba guys would put a penny in instead of a burst disk so they could put crazy pressures in the tanks.

Indefinitely. Fill it before leaving, have air for tinker when needed.

Ditto what everyone else is saying. Some tanks have held for years. Others weeks depending on some small leak somewhere. Better to store with air than without is my understanding

Leave it in there. If you come back to your tank a month later and it's empty you know you have a problem

I have a few that do this. I haven’t worried about it much, as they hold air for the day of play just fine. You think tank reg rebuild or one of the burst disks leaking / fill valve? Probably the fill valve I imagine. Doesn’t seem like a big enough issue to track down, idk.

I horde air. Every time I hit the field I bring a bunch of tanks and fill them all before I leave. Precious teching air! At least until I get my scuba tanks recertifed and filled.

This is the way! I usually bring 2-3 to fill; but if I have projects I will bring em all or a bunch.

Ok that's what I always do too. Top up all the tanks so I have air to fiddle with at home. I just started overthinking and wondered if that was doing any harm. Once the 2 I sent off to hydro get back then I'll really have a good air stash.

I am comfortable keeping air in a hpa tank for quite some time. I even have a co2 tank with vintage co2 from the 90's.

OG co2 smells better than modern day co2.

They are meant to hold pressure not to hold empty. You are stress cycling the cylinder when you de gas, which fatigues the materials.

These cylinders are designed to be neglectfully stressed so they only really fail for other reasons. So it doesn't matter but technically you are making the cylinder closer to its point of failure.

Also you are potentially exposing the cylinder to more moisture from outside air that again is not desirable.

As long as you never put oil in the fill nipple and the reg is screwed on all the way you should be good.

I've only had one burst disk pop at home... in the middle of the night... that was fun.
