My 12 year old picked this up at a yard sale from an older gentleman

Would anyone be able to help tell him about this gun ? He thinks it’s a Visali Fishbone , he was told it was 1k cnd when originally purchased around 1995 . He paid 100$ for it CND but now someone told him it’s a basic JT work 40$

He's right. It is from the '00s, after JT became part of Brass Eagle. Or at least the paintball segment did. I get fuzzy on the details. But yes it is a cheap gun mass produced in China or somewhere else overseas and imported for Walmart shelves. I don't even know this particular one, but there were all sorts of guns essentially just like this branded JT, Brass Eagle, or Viewloader (i.e. names that used to be worth something before they were acquired and cheapened in the late 90s/2000s). That particular logo never went on anything that retailed for $1000.

I am sorry to bear bad news. Like OpusX said, it will still clean up and sling paint, but it has no collector value

If that is a Viewloader hopper with the eyeball logo it actually has more collector value than the gun

Thank you for the information , he will be happy to hear about the view loader hopper then he won’t feel so down about it . But he’s for sure going to get a few rounds of fun out of it !

Lol that's cool we are in the machine.

I don't think they're worth much, but they have some old school cred, if that makes sense

Those guns weren't around in 95 and we're never near 1000 of any currency. I'd be going back to that person's house

Those were sold by JT in 2001 as the JT excelerator... The black and silver were for paintball stores to sell. Mass market ones were black and yellow.

MSRP on them was like $125...

To be Frank your kid got scammed.

I'd go back and give that man some what for, especially to a kid. Should have given him a better deal if anything. Always feel free to reach out on here for questions/prices, we'll make sure you don't get sold scams or false promises.

Chat gpt don't know squat about paintball. A lot of our history died with the loss of old MCB like the burning of Alexandria. Ai can scour the internet but a lot of the paintball knowledge lives on in old players, field owners, and us forum troglodytes.

why do I like these JT blowbacks!???

Do they seem well machined and well made?

Is it all spydery parts ie. bolts, barrels, etc?

            Paintball guns are cool.

They are made of soft aluminum and anything plated chrome will flake

Mostly I think but I believe there are some non compatible parts.

I’d give the guy the benefit of the doubt that he was ignorant as well, which is how I would approach it
if you have the ability to contact him again.
If its some rando that you’ll never see it again then chalk it up as lesson learned. I’m fifty and I still don’t trust “adults” Sounds like a made up word to me.
But if it’s someone you’ll see again, Tell him he was unfortunately wrong in his assessment of what it was and wait for him to offer back $60. If he doesn’t then tell him that the right thing for him to do is give your kid the $60 back. From there id probably continue to escalate but that is as far as I would tell someone else to go.

I mean he looked about 70-75 so maybe he really forgot , the guy looked super sad to sell it but the wife said it had to go ! Maybe he really did have a more expensive gun at one time and just forgot which one was which.

It is a learning experience.... We all get the opportunity to participate in them.... Take it in, and move on...

A future consideration: Don't let the kid wander around with $100.00 in his pocket........

He has his own business that he operates selling ice cream and treats from his bicycle ( he made his own ice cream cart ) and it was money he earned and splits it between , savings , investing and spending . So he earned that and was free to do what he wanted to do with it . He wanted to purchase it and resell it for a profit , now he will just keep it to play some paintball .

A cold hard learning experience. Go back to the seller if possible and explain the situation. If the seller can’t be reached then just take the loss and move forward. I do hope you can resolve the issue and get something back in the end.

So many things wrong with this narrative.

The short: if you knew what it was, the kiddo wouldn't be convinved it's not terribly valuable, AND used his own money, use it as a life lesson.

The long: if you didn't know it wasn't terribly valuable, I'll assume you are not terribly familiar with paintball equipment on the whole (this is not an insult). That's okay, we've all been scammed because we didn't know what something was (life lessons). If that is the case, though, the hell are you doing letting your twelve year old buy paintball equipment you know nothing about? Expert knowledge isn't required, general familiarity goes a very long way, though.

All that said, you could overhaul it and the kiddo can have 100 bucks worth of fun out of it. By the time it's useless to him, he'll either not be playing anymore, or as obsessed as the rest of us, and looking to upgrade.
edit: My suggestion is to keep, overhaul, and use together. Learning the gadgetry is an awesome shared experience, and he'll be one of the few his age rocking his own gear. That's worth the hundred, in my opinion.

This did happen , we tried to google image the gun but nothing solid was coming up so he asked chat gpt and it came back with the fishtail . We have now learned chat gpt is not good at identifying things lol . I have never played paintball ever and he has not him self either , the 100$ is his money he earned on his own business he started in May ! He puts some in savings , some for investments and some for spending . He decided he wanted to buy the gun and tried making sure it was worth something . We just randomly stopped at a yard sale , so we did not have a lot of time to look into it , we tried our best with a small amount of time . He said he will just keep it and go play some paintball , it’s in perfect condition and just needs a recertification on the tank . But yea he learned to research things more before making a bigger purchase .

That's awesome, then. Watch a youtube video or two on Spyders, they operate the same way, and the barrels are interchangeable. They're not the worst you could have, and not the worst beginner markers. Try the sport out, and have fun!

I hope that the two of you both go play, this is the best sport in the history of ever. Go to a field, and watch a few games. When you go to play, you can usually rent a tank and a mask for the day, or rent an entire setup. Or both Loose and disposable clothing is suggested, though.
The tank in the picture is a c02 tank. Most markers (pc for guns) tend to be more reliable and consistent with compressed air tanks (don't think automotive here, it's not compatible). Expect to get a couple of sideways glances from a shop or field tech when you ask them to fix or test it, just shrug your shoulders and say "kiddo's first gun", and they'll understand, or at least pretend to. If you do go to a shop (recommended), try a few different masks on for comfort. They are not all the same, and nobody has a good day with fogged goggles.
