History of the High Noon showdown

Now that the bi-annual High Noon quick draw competition has passed its 7th occurrence, I figured perhaps a documentation for posterity was in order. There are a couple of holes in my runner up data (be it lost brackets or brain cells) so if you or someone you know was a runner up in one of those slots please let me know!

The High Noon quick draw competition had its first go in 2021 at Slim’s Spring Stock Classic. It was adapted and arranged from a 10 pace turn and fire duel, hosted by Canadian rascal and heartthrob Third of Five . With Hugh adrift in the post covid world, and the addition of the Saturday Wild West scenario, Slim and I decided to transition the theme of the event while keeping the single shot spirit of the original. A set of rules were written and a competition was born.

Unfortunately, the original ruleset was not broad enough and clear victory proved troublesome to ascertain. So much so that the inaugural run fell on its face. We had to flesh out the rules and run the event a second time during lunch of the next day’s main stock class event. From there they were tweaked, tampered and tinkered to the final iteration we have now.

Without no further ado, the winners!

2023 saw back to back 3 man showdowns on account of broken brackets from not wanting to exclude anyone from the fun.

This year we decided to eliminate the possibility of a three man showdown to keep to the spirit of the Mano a Mano, who’s faster showdown. We incorporated a skill based point system for any necessary round byes.

There was one that I landed up as the dead in. Do not remember when. Can't find the patch either but then again my paintball stuff is in such disarray that it doesn't surprise me.

thanks for continuing to do these and listening to people and evolving the ruleset. Your doing a fabulous job.

Many thanks to Jesse for endeavoring to preserve one of the more awesome aspects of these events, and even bigger thanks for helping run the competition and craft the rule set we use today!

As Jesse points out, the current iteration of The High Noon Quick Draw Competition began in 2021 when the Wild West scenario games on Saturday were added. However, because everyone loves a good origin story, the original idea of the Wild West scenario day was born from the very first paintball event I ever organized... "Slim's Wild West Fun Feud" which took place at Strategy Plus in East Hampton, CT on November 15th, 1992. That event also featured the very first quick draw competition. I can't remember who took home the first place trophy, but the second place trophy went to our old friend Vito - back when he possessed the testicular fortitude to engage in such things.

Anyone who competes in the High Noon Quick Draw Competition should be proud to participate in a time-honored tradition of fun and good times. Maybe one day someone other than a Ragnastock team member will take home the award.
