Late to the Party Review: Push Unite

I finally bit the bullet and grabbed a modern paintball mask, a used Push Unite Clear Skull edition.

It came with all the fixings, including the case, nose bridge tool, microfibre, additional infamous strap, and a spare lens with cover.

Over the past several seasons I’ve been wearing a Vforce Grill, but have also used Vforce Profilers, JT Spectras) Empire E-vents. Dye masks are too small strong masculine chin (or fat head) so I’ve owned them as loaners and tried them on, but never played a game with them.

Initial thoughts: Pretty nice initial impression. The case is very nice, fits the mask perfectly. The mask itself looks pretty good, has high quality fit and finish with no obvious issues. The lenses appear to be quite high quality and has a good field of vision. The strap on the mask has some sort of sticky band on it to help hold it in place. Very tacky, so sticks to your hair a bit but leaves no residue. The overall package is quite nice and feels more premium than a standard mask like a Dye, JT or Vforce, which is important for a higher level, higher cost most.

I switched from JTs to Push when JT lenses started delaminating right out of the box. Comfort, field of view, weight...nothing felt like a downgrade. Lens swapping is obviously much easier. Big fan.

Big fan of my push's as well. Been wearing at least monthly for the last half year and could not be happier. Still trying to figure out why chin straps are necessary, and cut them off previous masks because they are constantly in the way and a PITA. Kudos to push for employing the magnet clasp that my kids bike helmets have had on them for 12+ years. Easy and comfy so I don't mind at all.

Tournaments require chin straps, so they're included on everything. I never used either

I started double strapping years ago after losing my mask when I jumped through the air to bunker my buddy. The chin strap does the same thing

Lens Changes:

There are a big deal. Having recently swapped
some old JT lenses out, I strongly prefer modern style quick release lenses. No, I won’t be replacing my lens that often, but u do take them out to clean them after playing and make sure there’s no stray paint on my mask.

So how does the slush fair? Pretty good, as one would expect from a modern mask. Not as easy as my Grill, but ones I figured things out, it’s a fairly easy process.

Nice review. I’ve always worn proflexes but picked one of these up a couple years ago for the aesthetics. Played in the rain once and it was fogging up when my proflexes weren’t. Also doesn’t have great chin coverage for my big face. Took a good hit to the jaw last time I went out. They look really cool, feel great, low profile, easy lens changes, but I’ve pretty well gone back to my tried and true proflexes.

Funny, I just finished more of my review and highlight a few concerns you’ve mentioned. I suppose some make just can’t handle a strong masculine chin!

Fit and Feeling:

This is the most important part. No matter how good a goggle looks, it has to be comfortable to wear.

Unfortunately I won’t be able to play with these for a while, so just going to wear them around the house a bit (and pester the cat). My initial thoughts are the foam is comfortable and not scratch. They field of view if a bit narrow, akin to a Grill. I can see my my nose bridge and the clear goggle frame in my field of view. Most masks have dark interiors the frame isn’t as noticeable, but the white/clear frame contrasts with the dark foam. I also get reflections of the vents on top of the mask along the top of my lens. This may be due to indoor lighting, if I put my hand over the vents the reflection goes away… but these masks doesn’t have visions. Apparently you can make a Grillz visor work.

I do find the mask does pinch my ears a little. I don’t have the biggest pair of Alfred E. Neuman’s, but I don’t like
ly ears squashed. It doesn’t seem too bad though.

The shape of the mask, especially the bottom skirt, is fairly tapered, fairly similar to a Grill mask. I cannot slide my finger around my chin without hitting the mask. The mask is fairly rigid but the cheek section is more flexibility. I have concerns that taking a shot in the jaw line is going to suck, especially along the flexible sides of the mask along my rear of my jaw line going up to my ear. Poking the mask directly where my earlobe is hurt a little, so getting a direct hit there would be extremely unpleasant.

My jaw line is just covered by this mask. So it is bigger than a Dye I4. If I open my mouth be chin extends below the mask. If I keep the mask I’ll likely order the extension pieces, which is minimal, but does add a little more length to the mask. I work in the legal field so can’t be lshowing up to work with cut lips or face welts.

Much like the Grill, these masks leaves a lot of your forehead and head exposed. Again a toque and a headband are the best solution for this. I do not like taking shots off the forehead, especially cheap field paint that does not break.

I’m currently wearing this mask as I type this all out of my phone. The mask continues to feel comfortable, breathes well but still puts pressure on my ears. I usually wear a toque when playing though, so I’ll try one on later while watching a movie. So as usually I’ll have more to say.

The jaw shot I took was visible for about 5 days. No bueno. Didn’t know there were extension pieces so I’ll have to check that out.

Watched about an hour of tv with the mask on over a toque. Helped a lot with my ears and the mask was pretty comfortable.

I wasn’t bothered by the glare on the lens, but my TV room does not have overhead lighting, so that was the biggest difference.

I am able to see the section of the lens that has the Push logo in my peripheral vision. It is minor, kind of annoying. Not a deal breaker at all, but something I prefer not to see. The view through the lens feels a little restricted given the contrast of the mask’s frame.
