Can you fully invert the feedblock to make it an underfeeder?

Ohhh now you have my attention.

Funny thing is I had one of these along with a vl genesis that we used as loaners for my outlaw days.. I never once even looked at that rotating feed.

But, can it run this good off 12 grams? Stock, dirty, and with Draxxus rec sport paint

78 degrees outside for both guns. About 15 seconds between each shot.

Hmmm, you would need to make a little room for the linkage arm. The photo you li have with the two halves apart you can see the 3 channels that are cut in the top of the breach to make space for the linkage arm. If you went vertical underfed you might be able to just cut into the detent block to get the space you need

I ended up finding one of these Tac 5s—definitely in rough shape, with the inside caked in paint. Like Trbo323 mentioned, though, it was super easy to field strip and clean up. Honestly, I think these are better than the 98s. Great write-up, man. Mine is missing the handle and I think the angled feed - it can be adjusted to LF or RF but it just came with a stack. Also looks like the rail is somewhat unique. But overall I like the marker.

Oh yeah I forgot to mention if you guys are going to grab one of these beauties, make sure you have at least the straight section of the feedneck. Because they are threaded a lot of times players take them off and then they get left behind. Good luck finding a replacement.

Thanks for your writeup! The ones I’ve had didn’t include the elbow so I was confused by the ability to change the feed angle. That’s really cool.

I went through a couple of these and I really do like the ease of disassembling them and the feed neck orientation changes. Rear cocking made the breach closed, so less dirt and paint got inside during use. Those are definitely cool features over a Tippmann. When comparing this to the T98/98C/98P or any US Army marker, there are good reasons to pick up a Tac-5 instead.

I had issues, like others, with velocity. Finding parts can be tough, and I had to scrounge for parts kits to replace crusty main springs. The thing I disliked most about them was the double trigger with a LOOOONG Spyder-like trigger pull. Tippmann single triggers have a short, crisp pull that can be lightened further with a pen spring - I love the feel of a Tippy trigger, but that’s personal preference. I’ve replaced my T98 loaners with A5s and have called it a day. Parts are always available, basic disassembly uses pull pins like the TAC5, the valve comes apart without the stupid retaining spring in the T98 valve, and the Cyclone keeps semi players from clipping paint in the breach.

Of course the A5 is roughly double the cost on the used market over a 98 or TAC5, so comparing them is probably less than fair.

We used Tac 5's many many years ago. They were terrible and always broke. The rotating feed neck has a major design flaw. The bolt face is cupped to suit the vertical feed, when you rotated the breach the sides of the bolt would stick in to the breach and would not allow paint to load. You had to machine off the bolt face to get it to work correctly.
If anyone wants parts, we have heaps here in Australia for them as we were the JT dealer back when they came out. https://paintballshop.com/jt-usa-2/

Wait...hate to low-key derail the thread but Tippmann isn't even building Model 98s anymore? What are they building??

Tippmann just released a new updated Vantage. Unlike the old Vantage, which was just a re-release of the shitty old Gryphon, this new one is far better constructed. It's still an entry level plastic marker, but with much better plastic, and better/stronger design.

The only thing tippmann seems to be selling these days is the last vestiges of their brand recognition, unfortunately.

Yup. Basically it's the chronos and the TMC. Which is just a mag feed chronos.

There are still some tipx on their site but I highly highly suspect those are old stock because they have been out of parts like the on/off pin for a few years. If they were still producing the flex valve there's no reason to be out of that part
