None of my friends play anymore but I'd like to try it again.

Yes, the original people I played paintball with quit decades ago. Even the re-iteration of paintball buddies has changed out multiple times and faded away. If I go to play, it's just me. It's rather unfortunate in that the field I like to play the most typically doesn't get much walk on any more.

i was out for 20 years. last year I just showed up at an event by myself, knew no one there really. play with at least a few members of that same crew a few times a month now. getting together tomorrow actually.
use it as an opportunity to go and make some new friends that share your interest.

All the time. I travel a lot it different fields often just by myself. My wife just started to get into it so we have been playing together and that’s cool to. No reason you can’t find walk on games at any commercial field. Introduce yourself you will get to know the regulars and become one.

Sure, not an issue for me. I like to play paintball so if I want to go play I just go. I do so less often now not because I don't want to go by myself, more that I am not too interested in playing with the rental crowd. My days of "shepherding" newbies is over.

Thats how I got back into playing fairly regularly - by going alone for the first few times. Nearly two years actually. But it was only a few times a year. After a while, I began to meet people that had a similar mentality and we would meet up when we could. Now I get on the field just about every other weekend and play on a team.
I've found that the paintball community is one of the most accepting groups I've ever been a part of. Get back out there and enjoy the sport!

The last few outings I showed up for walk-on play by myself I did not enjoy. My last outing was with the local MCB crew (meeting them for the first time) for a magfed/limited paint game and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I think it would be very rare for me to show up alone to a regular walk-on game and enjoy it; some iteration of limited paint game I probably could though.

I definitely do. That's how I met up with like minded people to play with. I got back into the sport in 2020 after about 14 years of absence. I literally just started showing up on open play days and started talking to people. I haven't met a player yet that didn't want to talk about their gear, it's a good conversation starter.
Now you're definitely gonna run into a bad day eventually. It happens more when you arent with people you know and like to play with. But just try to make the best of it when it happens. Don't let a bad day discourage you from going out again. Heck, the first day I went out in 2020, I had nothing but problems with my gear, but by the end of the day I got it dialed in and left with a smile.
