    Freak xl question

So I'm looking to get a freak XL set. Looks like I can snag the full set for about 100. My question is how often do those that own a set find themselves using the larger end of the set? Been reading and it sounds like paint runs small these days. Am I better off getting the full set or get 2 or 3?

Lastly, how much improvement have you guys seen with them on your guns?

I have a std 5” freak set, I have never used anything over 0.687 (I typically use 0.684, 0.681 and 0.677 the most)

I also have 2 markers that run Freak XL, I only have a 0.684 and 0.677 backs and haven’t needed anything else (yet).

    I hope that helps

edit: Thank you Trbo323 correct back is 0.677 not 0.679

I don't think I've ever used anything over 684 recently unless its old swelled balls. 684 to 675 is my main range.

687 is the largest I've ever used as well and I could have gotten away with 685.

Get the smaller ones and there's 2 sizes lower you might want to consider as well, they are like a 677 Ave a "reball" 675. I've used both when shooting paint

I don’t think it’s worth getting the full kit. Just get the few sizers you will likely use. I use a .681 90% of the time. So a lil up and a lil down from that will give you most of the range you would ever need. I have run into abnormally large paint a few times but it rare. Most of the time it’s smaller. Just buy the sizes you’re going to use.

It also depends on what you shoot. Anything with functional detents just over bore let the detents do their job.

It really only matters on like a pump/cocker where when a ball is chambered your barrel bore acts as a detent.

Down side to a freak is they bend easy do get a good case. They won’t shoot clean after a break. Paint will get captured behind the insert and weep requires a full break down barrel insert and between the insert and barrel.

I run standard freak because all my barrels are setup for them already I haven’t seen any real world difference between the XL and standard freaks.

I just recently picked up a J4 barrel kit that’s a full fixed bore one piece I’m excited to try it’s hard to beat for the money. I like one piece barrels that are the same bore from back to the tip.

But freaks do the job just fine all my Phantom barrels are bored for them.

XL vs Standard is mostly preference and availability. Like most here I typically only use a single size (.675 for local paint), and have a few above that (.679, .682, .684). What I have found handy is actually having more than one of my main sized insert. I probably have 4 or 5 , .675 inserts so I don't have to remember to switch them out and accidentally leave one at home.

Depends on marker, your paint quality. Pump or Autococker? Slight underbore to stop rollouts, unless you want a bigger bore then use something else to prevent rollouts like printed anti rollout detents. Something mechanical or electronic that has detents to keep the ball in, I always overbore. An entire kit might be overkill, and you might not notice much difference compared to standard inserts, but others have claimed slightly improved efficiency or higher velocity with a longer control bore. I'd pick 3 or 4 sizes from smallish like 680 to bigger like 693.

I ran a classic Freak for ages, and now I run the XL. I bought the XL for literally no reason other than Tom Kaye says an 8" control bore is best, and I've been a long time member of the cult of TK.

                But I really don't notice a difference.

Paint quality by far is the determining factor in accuracy. Wherever I go I have to use field paint that is rather inconsistent in size. I've got one of those Exalt ball size gauge and I can confirm that within the same bag I see some balls that get stuck at 0.687 and others that fall through at 0.684. In such cases, especially if the weather is hot/humid I tend to overbore. I know that the theory is to slightly underbore to improve consistency but if I do that I will get the occasional barrel break.

I've got Inception Designs PWR inserts for my main barrel kit and I constantly swap between 0.690 and 0.685. On my Shocker AMP, 90% of the time I use the stock 0.687 insert. On my Phantom pump gun, my 'default' insert is 0.682, but I often switch to the 0.677 insert.

I'm often ask the same question whenever I'm on a field. Most of time my answer is "keep your stock barrel. But if you insist, get ONE extra barrel in between 0.680 and 0.685".

First,i love the freak system. Second best paintball invention next to compressed air. I would usually never use any size larger than .679 ,but at skirmish ION the paint was large and had to ise the .687 insert that came with the shocker.I haven’t seen paint that large since the nineties. I purchased every size down from .687 to .675. I wont purchase the larger inserts unless i see this unicorn paint again.

Never used over a .684 and rarely use that size at all. Mostly use .679 or .681 occasionally .677

i use the .687 with my open bolt markers since around here(midwest) its always a massive overbore

I dont think ive used any size besides a .687. That being said im generally shooting the same paint every weekend.

so I ended up getting a slew of them but not the kit, I stuck with the smaller side of things with my largest being .686
