So I just got a new tank reg...

This is probably a dumb question, but I've always gotten my tanks preassembled and I just want to be 100% sure I'm not about to explode myself or create a DiY missile in the staging area.

I just got a new (ninja) reg for my HPA tank. Can I just thread the new reg into the tank by hand and it'll be fine when I fill it with air? Would I need a specialty tool to crank it tight or is hand pressure all I need?

Also the orings on the reg go in dry, correct?

In all seriousness, make sure it is tight, the oring and the threads work together to keep it from backing out or creating a missile. I have always used hand tight, nothing crazy like a strap wrench or vice.If you decide to put a little dow 33 on the oring it will not hurt it but it can go in dry.

        Hand tight is just fine.

I usually snug it lightly with a strap wrench. Mark a line on bottle and reg for peace of mind. Paint pen works well.

I've always hand tightened without any problems. I'll give it some muscle, but I've never used loctite or strap wrench or anything

I'm constantly swapping regs on my tanks. Put a slight coating of grease on the O-ring. This will make life easier if you ever want to remove the reg again. Then just hand tightened. I've done this dozens of times without any issues.

I've always used a strap wrench and reg removal tool to get them on there tight but I also know the next time they are coming off is in 5 years for hydro. I don't think there's anything wrong with hand tight I would just crank down on it as much as you can

As long as the reg is screwed down enough so there's no (or minimal) gap between the bottle and the reg, you should be good.

The idea is to prevent that reg-to-tank oring from extruding out of that interface, which would cause a leak. And that's the worst case scenario: air gushing out around that oring. So it's a pretty safe either way.

The tank reg has a groove in the threads for safety if it was to unscrew under pressure it would make a lot of noise but it’s not going to take flight. Under pressure it would be very difficult to unscrew as well.

If you ever fly with your tank the regulator needs to come off so the inside can be inspected. Otherwise the airlines can take your tank.

I attended Bob Maguires "Paintball Training Institute" to learn air smithing.
There it was taught that the correct torque was 24 foot pounds.

I just got done calling ANS gear about an empire tank I bought from them - it was supposed to come without a reg and the price was right so i picked one up. they sent one with a reg - fine, but I want to put a different reg on it.... when i tried to remove it - with a reg tool and good strap wrench it it came loose, but quickly bound up and then snapped off! you could see gobs of red loctite in there. To their credit they sent return label and will send a new tank out. They did also mention that empire tanks come from the factory with red loc-tite, so beware if you ever swap an empire reg!

I was trying to pull the reg from one of my older ninja tanks that's not worth retesting. Same deal. So firmly locktited in there that 2 guys together couldn't budge it.
Anyways, I had a regless HK tank and ANS had the ninja regs on sale so here we are.

Empire tanks are THE WORST, they absolutely hose the threads with loctite. I no longer offer to pull friend's regs off Empire tanks without "a waiver". That seemed to be the fashion of the day though, regs ~20yrs ago were "glued in" --- maybe because the tank-related deaths that hit press in the 2000s. I'm pretty sure Nitro Duck welded their regs in, I'm not man enough to even try lol
