Detent fingers are probably the best invention of the modern age if you're using anything with a closed bolt.

I have a couple barrel kits and rarely use anything below a 687.

Overbore with detent fingers and maybe match bore with anything I want to maximize efficiency on.

I have used 677 682 687 as my bore sizes for years now, mostly using 682 as it covers the variation ball to ball.

If you have a modern marker with functional detents bore size is irrelevant. Let the detents do their job. Use whatever barrel you like. Efficiency is irrelevant today makers are super efficient, tanks are smaller and lighter than ever. Slight overbore makes for a much more consistent shot with today’s paint you can’t run a tight bore on most paint today. The paint today isn’t consistent enough. Slight overbore and let the detents work.

On your cocker just pick up some Redleader barrel detents it will eliminate rollouts on even the smallest of paint. I like them because they seem to hold paint very consistently regardless of how inconsistent the paint is. The rings last forever as well. You are more likely to lose it changing barrels out than have it fail. I buy them in bulk and hand them out to anyone having rollout issues they are worth their weight in gold. I swear by these things.

I run a .681 with these rings it’s been years since I got a fat enough ball to require me to remove the finger detents.

Thanks for the link. I was mostly asking in regards to whether people bore match with open bolt markers. I'll stick with my usual with my closed bolt guns.

I've been running a 0.685 insert on my main Emek (the little "cousin" of the 180r if you will) but I've had a higher than usual amount of breaks (I never chop however). I suspect it is due to the very poor quality of paint lately, as its size can be all over the place. If the average is say 0.680ish then the odd, oblong ball at 0.690 may cause a problem. Running a 0.689ish bore should do the trick.

For my pump guns I underbore (anywhere from 0.675 to 0.680) to prevent rollouts and I don't really have issues.
"Aren't you getting too old for this??"
        "Nope."

I've run my .670 brass insert the last couple of times I've been out, it kept things remarkably consistent. I tried the detent fingers I had with a .684 barrel but I was getting rollouts and 80FPS swings.
And God turned to Gabriel and said: “I shall create a land called Canada of outstanding natural beauty, with majestic mountains soaring with eagles, sparkling lakes abundant with bass and trout, forests full of elk and moose, and rivers stocked with salmon. I shall make the land rich in oil so the inhabitants prosper and call them Canadians, and they shall be praised as the friendliest of all people.”

“But Lord,” asked Gabriel, “Is this not too generous to these Canadians?”

And God replied, “Just wait and see the neighbors I shall inflict upon them."

iamthelazerviking do you mean standard or XL? Both, depending on the setup I'm using.

0.675 is what I use 90% of the time with the cruddy undersized modern paint

Since I started bore sizing paint maybe 15 years ago, I remember maybe one or two instances that I had to use a size larger than 685 for the blow-through test.
