Just wondering where in the slot in the barrel the wire should sit (toward the front, rear?) And is any trimming required?

Pretty much in the middle where there is not obstruction from movement, then you can drop a ball in and see how much play there is then you can adjust if necessary. I've never used anything but the Wire Detents (still have a bunch) and just drop them in make sure they move freely and rarely had to worry about fine tuning.
