    Good place to start

Since I apparently need to accumulate as many of the guns I could never afford back around 2000, now I think i need to add an Automag to the collection. Advice on a good example to get as an introduction to the genre or better yet, what to stay away from?

I do love the look of the minis. That shroud is just cool, and not breaking the bank is important, I've spent too much on other toys lately.

I can't speak to not breaking the bank..... nor am I a huge lover of Mags, but I've spent the last few years building " a mag that I love to look at AND love to play with" I think I finally got there....
Mini- mag, LV -10, benchy frame, Docs Gas through, Boa Barrel, swage lock stainless gas line, inception ASA. it made it out with me a couple afternoons now and I really enjoyed playing with it.

look for a mini, preferably with an LV -7 at least. get a AGD rebuild kit and a gallon of outlast, BW detents and your off to the races. keep your eyes out for other goodies and you'll have the ultimate mag before you know it.

How do I identify what valve something has without actually getting it in my hand to be able to post pics here?

It's lasered on the valve itself, back of the gun, drivers side. You should be able to easily spot it unless someone has sanded it off.

Gotcha. Seems simple enough. Now to obsess over them until I buy something cheap and crappy that I regret before buying the one I should have gotten in the first place.

There is no such thing as a crappy mag. There are only good mags and then there are mags that need additional parts. 😉

Fair point. But I'm talking about the priced so low how could I go wrong example. The kind only taken out to the field on a rope behind their truck, and by the time I replace and upgrade everything, I end up with the gun I wanted and the same pile of parts I started with. Not making that kinda mistake for the 10th time.... probably.

Just get a cheap ass stock GRN mag frame.

They are one of the first things to go for people upgrading, and they have a crisper trigger pull than a lot of the "upgrade" options... Im looking at you benchmark...

I haven't shot a mag in years. I have a half assembled one in my basement, but thinking back.. I enjoyed my classic valved cf framed mini mag the most. Over time I upgraded it. bought an x valve, and a ule body, ule frame, ect, ect. The whole time I thought it was way nicer ( it was) but it just plain ole worked before I upgraded everything. I grew to hate the finicky bitch. At that time I had already sold all my take offs.

Find a classic mag with the CF frame and AGD grip (or Benchmark if you want to be fancy). If you prefer a center feed just buy a ULE body (only upgrade needed if you want something easy to work on and that will work for years). If you want something fancy buy a second one with some nice custom parts.

                  Here is my favorite mag

It was rebranded as the "Classic Automag" for good reason, I would stick with that for the first one.

On the other end, the "classic RT" (little c) model requires full automag knowledge and is restrictive on mods.

I would second this. I love classic valves.

I have owned quite a few mags multiple X valves retro valves and classics.

I have only kept the classics. They simply work and work damn well. I purchased one of mine new in 1999. And it still runs every bit as good as it did all those years ago. I have resealed the valve once in all that time and even then it was not leaking and functioned fine.

The X-valves are very nice, light and fast. The level 10 bolt is a great system that’s epically soft on paint once broken in and tuned. But the classic still feels special to me and I never feel as though I missing anything using either of mine.

Mags are one of the most versatile platforms available. From low cost entry to extreme nose bleed shocking prices. Its a great platform because you can customize it to your likings. It all starts with a valve, bolt, rail, and grip frame and from there it can be changed/upgraded as you see fit. Most valves, grip frames/body/rails are interchangeable. So your basic mag can evolve into a monster. Then you have extra parts that spawn its own life and soon becomes another mag. They are super reliable, easy to work on and require very little maintenance when setup correctly in their basic form or can be a little temperamental depending on performance upgrades. For a marker platform that is 35+ years old, they are amazing and can keep up with modern guns.

Be warned if you go down this rabbit hole it never ends with just one Mag.
