X valve broken outer regulator spring

Wondering if anyone ever had this issue?

First time I see one broken and even AGD is mentionning on their store that it should never need replacing.

a spring under compression for 20 years might eventually fail on a tensile level.

My oldest X Valve is 6638 and my newest is 9939. Maybe a force of nature caused it or a repetitive strain induced? I havent seen anything like that. I guess its time to get some new springs and keep on keepin on.

Edit*** I will note that the way it broke is not a typical. It is more in line with high pressure and adjustments being made. Potentially a weak point exacerbated by the above.

Springs absolutely do fail, especially small helical compression springs under constant preload and repeated cycling. The break in this one showing classic signs of torsional fatigue with a brittle final fracture is exactly what’s described in Shigley, the SAE Spring Manual, and ASM’s failure analysis guides. This is a completely normal spring failure mode, not some impossible event.

I've had trouble with sand getting into pump-mag wave springs. They would break at the contact points unless we kept them clean and lubed. Yours may have had a little between the coils and rubbed a scratch in there at some point. (?)

Never saw one fail in all my years as an AGD Tech. I am sure Dave will warranty that part.
