    Spring vs spacers

Got my hands on a classic valve that came with a spring tip. Whats the advantage of using a spring and whats the advantage of using spacers?

The spring always works, the spacers are a PITA.

    That's pretty much it.

The spring works for multiple tolerances when the spring is new. Once you figure out which spacer you need in a particular setup, it should work until you change something or wears.

Eventually the spring wears out or we change something, so it's not a terrible thing either way. A new spring is faster to setup. A spacer lasts longer (probably).

I don't think so. However, any unused ones are still good. I don't think they were special so you might find them from a supplier.

Springs just work; no mucking about trying to find the exact spacer length.
