    Autococker recommendation

Friend of mine wants to get back into paintball after a ten year hiatus. He's shot one of my spare Emeks and he likes that okay, but he's been talking about getting an Autococker again. He had a Trilogy years ago and loved it. Well, it was his first paintball gun ever and didn't really have much to compare it to. He did switch to a Mini before taking a break, but now that he's back and everyone is shooting mech at my club, he wants a mech. He wants an Autococker. And he wants my recommendation.

Problem is I don't know anything about Autocockers, so I don't know how to steer him. The only Autococker I've ever owned was a Trilogy, which I immediately sold to him because I didn't like it as much as my classic Automag.

He's flashy and likes colorful markers. He had a red Trilogy and a bright blue Mini before, so he doesn't want a plain black Emek. Unfortunately, he's also no good with fixing paintball guns. He's no a do-it-yourself guy. He says he doesn't have the time or desire to learn. He'd rather pay someone else to fix it for him. So I'm wary about recommending any cocker to him that he would need to send out and tune every once in a while. He really needs something that just works every time.

So what do you all think? I suppose I could recommend he get another Trilogy. I can add on an on/off ASA and a clamping feedneck for him. Or what about a Resurrection? Are those worry free? His budget is probably $300-$400, so a used Resurrection isn't outside of his reach. I'm just not sure if that's a good fit for him.

Unpopular opinion - Cockers are reliable with stock parts. Loctite everything once it's set and you'll have zero problems.

To the pedants out there - obviously threaded timing rods et al. I'm not talking 1992 here... but anything WGP introduced post 98 is pretty much fine.
And God turned to Gabriel and said: β€œI shall create a land called Canada of outstanding natural beauty, with majestic mountains soaring with eagles, sparkling lakes abundant with bass and trout, forests full of elk and moose, and rivers stocked with salmon. I shall make the land rich in oil so the inhabitants prosper and call them Canadians, and they shall be praised as the friendliest of all people.”

β€œBut Lord,” asked Gabriel, β€œIs this not too generous to these Canadians?”

And God replied, β€œJust wait and see the neighbors I shall inflict upon them."

Unpopular it may be, but it is the cold, hard truth. Stock parts are perfectly fine for most use cases.

If he gets a cocker make sure he understands how how to chrono it and that more pressure does not necessarily mean more velocity. It may need more spring tension.

trilogies really are great as long as he gets some upgrades right out of the gate. reg, feedneck mod, and a real main spring. After that skies the limit. I have one with some ups on the high end up that range available.

ressys are a good option especially if you can get one that is pre-owned that is working fine. Most of the orings that came stock with the ressys were trash. So plan on rebuilding the whole thing including the reg seat for the hpr. Plan on slotting the brass asa piece in case he picks up a ninja tank with a ball valve. The big downside the ressy has is the trigger feel it was designed so new players wouldn't short stroke but it ended up being a turn off as it felt very clunky. inception nos trigger plate fixes that. you can get away with modding the stock plate with some files but takes some fiddling.

you can always pick up a 2kish vert feed cocker but that being said it may need timing/rebuilding etc.

I highly recommend picking one up from someone that is experienced with cockers and knows it is going to someone that does not have a ton of experience. Have it set conservatively with a heavier main spring so he can do all of the adjustment on the reg and loctite everything. Hammer lug, pump arm, etc.

shooting you a pm, i have a couple things in that range and happy set things conservatively and loctite accordingly.

yea, I am agreement as well that cocker can be very reliable! I was nervous too when I did my first build in 2018 about it having issues , but I used a good inception 3way right from the get go.

I set that nylon set screw , timed the gun, and the timing has not moved since that time. I have this gun out a 2-3 times out each season, and its been great.

The single issue I have had is the pump rod threaded out of the back block one time. But it was easy to catch and a little purple loctite on those threads should fix it up nicely!

Inception 3 ways take the pain out of teching a cocker. I bought one specifically to replace an Oracle 3-way that was just a pain in the butt.

I think of autocockers like analog gear. The new markers are all digital. Sometimes you want that response of the backblock movement. I get it. I play with angels cockers and a DYE DSR.

To the surprise of no one, I would definitely recommend a trilogy. As long as you get a low pressure gun (meaning, any model that's not the sport), just put a good barrel on it, mod the feedneck (they're not threaded), and replace the springs (they wear out really fast), you'll have a gun that's more reliable than most cockers for less money, that shoots just as good if not better. I wouldn't waste time with upgrading the HPR, LPR, etc.

The ressi would be a good option with the mods people have already suggested. I will say that if you swap out the sear spring, the stock trigger plate is actually pretty nice. The stock springs are just way heavier than they should be.
