Just picked up a gunmetal/battleship grey Dye, and am currently cleaning it up and rebuilding it. I would like to have the ability to use freak inserts, and this is where you guys come in:

Think it better to have the original boomstick back bored, or pick up a cheap black UL back? IF you think UL, gloss or matte black? Also debating snagging a hyper 2 to make it more period correct, and same question for that - gloss or matte black?

I would try to get the existing one bored, by BMC if he is up to doing stainless.

The cheapest way would be to buy a Sconi oil can back. It'll make the barrel slightly shorter though.

Is the barrel glued? Just get the sconi back

I think black would look good if you do go that route. If you decide to bore just make sure your Boomer is a threaded two piece and not glued. I don't believe anyone will attempt to bore if it's glued. Personally, both options are relatively low-cost enough that I would do both. Then you have to option to switch up the look if you like.

Don’t waste time and money having the old back milled to accept freak inserts, just buy a new matching grey barrel with clear Freak compatible back. That way you keep the original and have two working barrels. Sometimes you want that big bore.

Sconi back call it a day. If you can find an older version it looks just like a slightly shorter dye back. Excepts the dye tip and takes standard freaks.

sconi backs feel cheap - bore an OG dye UL back. I have both, I have played with both, would choose the OG every time.

Don’t the ULS backs fit the older tips maybe that’s a better option. I would just grab a .681 back.

I definitely prefer the Sconi back over a bored UL back for freak bore.

Yeah this is one of his earlier ones. It looks very similar to the dye back. It’s centered perfectly and takes any of the dye tips. I ran it on my Whoosh for years.

I don’t like adapters. I find the least amount of steps in the barrel the better I like a barrel. All my favorite barrels are one piece and the same bore from threads to tip. I had a larger bore Dye back (stainless) that was bored for freaks but I didn’t like the way it shot going from freak bore to the stock bore to barrel tip. I found the Sconi to shoot much better with the freak insert directly up against the dye tip.

the one I had looked different, it came on a marker I bought, none of my inserts or tips would line up concentric. totally agree, 1-pc are the best.

Yeah these are the earlier ones. He made a few different designs for the dye tips. This one’s my favorite.

Aesthetically a dust black back would look better then the polished but if you like that polished back I would not hesitate to get it bored for standard freak inserts. I do not feel having a barrel freak insert bored lowers the value of the marker as a whole and for some may even increase its value/desirability more.

You could just leave it as is and run some finger detents between the barrel. Cockers are gas hogs to begin with so you’re going to be using a large tank. The change in efficiency is very little with a freak bore so you’re not going to pick up much. Finger detents will allow you to shoot today’s crappy in constant paint to so it will be more reliable with the over bore and finger detents.

These things work amazing and last forever as long as you remember they are in there when you take off your barrel.
