Removing threaded inserts from a phantom

    Hi guys

I'm sending out a dropout valve to get anodized and am wondering what the best method to remove the inserts from the body without scratching it is?

    Thanks in advance guys

Typically heat, Do you have a soldering pen iron? you could probably put that inside the threads then loctite a screw in, let cure and remove. I would use something sturdy like a cap head screw.

Gawd, that reminded me of the "baking" phase some years back.

@brokeass-baller I haven't thought about that phase in years, I can vaguely recall the pbn thread that started it all.

Thankfully, it was a short lived fad. People baking Egos and Matrices and other crazy expensive guns, running the risk of hurting tolerances, just to see how their ano would change.

+1 on soldering iron, the ones from walmart are fine. there's a few chemical solutions as well (soak in acetone overnight). and you can email EV about getting a raw body with loose inserts

Acetone will probably be my first move, after that a cheap soldering irons gonna be the next. Unfortunately the part I need to remove the insert from is a dropout valve which EV doesn't seem to carry

whatever you do, dont trust the annodizer to plug or mask over the inserts they WILL melt and ruin the body

Heat and then a straight flute screw extractor to remove the insert.

Dose that destroy them? Any chance you will get some more in? I know you have some of them in stock.

You put them back in the same way with a lil thread locker?

Once upon a time, I would have said to not worry about it and junk whatever you removed and replace with a new insert. Nowadays, those inserts ain't cheap. ('getting more in' isn't the issue, it's whether I have any margin to sell them on my site, or if it's best to just tell people to buy direct from EV)

That being said, as long as you're careful, a straight flute extractor shouldn't destroy the inserts at all - it can score them along the internal threads a little (as long as you're not too heavy-handed), but the damage should be minimal and will not affect the usefulness of the insert.

Awesome I figured there was no way to get them out without smoking them. Cool thanks for the tip.

Have Blue any chance you have the specs on the extractor you use? I ordered a set and found that none of them fit properly.

I'd have to find where the heck I have them (haven't used them in years), but I believe it was just a Craftsman set (which has gone by the way of the dodo, of course). This Gearwrench set looks like it should be a pretty close match: https://www.lowes.com/pd/GearWrench-...Set/1002986632
