Random Phantom questions

So I picked up a new to me phantom last month and have been rocking stock class vs electros that few time out playing. Got back into the sport after 15 years away. I noticed that things have changed a bit since I had my last phantom. Namely detent rings, or the lack of them and that CCI changed hands.

My questions:
1. Where do I source detent rings?
2. I picked up an older phantom, will the newer parts still work on it ( I.e. breech 2.0 and freak bored barrels )
3. Is the Spring Pheed a good upgrade?
4. I’ve never used a rear bucket changer before, is it different, better or worse than VSC ( that I have)
5. Will regular 1911 grips fit on the frame?

If not available from the site, it will have to be used or make custom ones. Have you considered getting a freak barrel for it instead?

It will depend how old you phantom is, but I less it's a very early one it should all fit

never used the CCI one, and make my own, so I'm not the best placed to answer that 😅

Its a matter of preference and habit, they work exactly the same 👍

not sure, it seams a bit hit and miss depending on the exact hole spacing but I've always managed to make them fit

1. Get the new 2.0 breach with the ASP detent mod. You won’t need the detent rings.
2. Yes as long as it’s not so old that it has a one piece body.
3. I don’t like the new spring feed I find it’s slower than the OG rock and cock.
4. I prefer a VSC but lots of people run the rear Bucket changer. Find your flavor.
5. Yes but they will hang over on the very bottom of a CCI 45 frame buy like 1/4” at the back of the frame.

Yup, I have detent rings that sit in a parts bin of excess phantom parts. Detent rings are mah, Dummy Detents or ASP modified is the way to go.

1: you don’t want CCI detent rings, they suck. They break paint. Tape is better. Plain black vinyl electrical tape.

2: new breaches will work on anything that isn’t unibody. Phantom barrels have been the same for a long time but some early ones are incompatible…maybe.

3: I haven’t heard one good thing about the SpringPheed and a bunch went up for sale here right after it shipped so…my guess is that it sucks. I haven’t used one. Spring feeds are a weird beast anyways since they put you in a class that isn’t stock or anything else.

4: I think if making the VSC didn’t help a single thing that it wouldn’t have become the standard for Phantoms. Keeping the 12g vertical has to be good for a few more shots. If not it makes the gun much harder to work on for zero benefit which would mean it was a pointless waste and I’ve never heard that mentioned before.

5: 1911 panels will work but solid wraparound grips will need to be modified to fit.

BONUS:

a: You can fix rollouts with tape or nail polish, basically for free.

b:You could also send your body to be modified by ASP which would run you a few dozen dollars.

c: You could buy a new breach from CCI for TRIPLE what they used to cost which doesn’t ship with the correct o-rings leaving you to experiment with o-rings until you get it right. By the time this is done expect to be out about $90 or so.

d: you could get a freak set. This will have you measuring and messing with inserts every single time you play if not multiple times through the day.


I’d go with “tape”. It’s only the cheapest, it’s often all around the best fix. Those with fancier pants think anything that didn’t come off a mill or a lathe is too ghetto to be used but…tape is, all around, the ultimate fix.

Detent options for a Phantom:

1. ASP detent breech modification - milled to use two small o-rings to hold the ball after loading in front of the bolt just behind the barrel entrance. I have two breeches I plan on sending off to Have Blue of Air Soldier Products [ASP] to have milled.
2. Spyder Detent modification small recessed hole in the breech similar to the ASP detent - easy DIY if you are not afraid to put a drill to your Phantoms' body. This is what I use on my Duck Slide and my Spring Feed Phantom.
3. Nail Polish detents - build up small areas with nail polish to act as a Wedgit style detent. easy DIY and simple to remove if needed. Takes time to dry, biggest potential downside is the gap between the breech and where the ball sits when loaded. I've never had a problem with this but there is a potential [though small] of causing breaks if the nail polish detents are too tall. I like to do three at ~120 degrees apart. Cheap & semi permanent.
4. Tape detent - small piece of tape (typically electrical tape) the extends into the barrel and wraps around the edge of the barrel. Super easy, quick to add/remove, works well and dirt cheap. I personally like to use a small strip of Coaches tape over electrical because it is a tad thicker and stays in place better but I always have a roll of electrical tape in my kit so there is that. This detent option is always there, easy DIY and cheap. I might have it listed as #4 but it is the most common method I use on my old school markers.
5. No detent, detent is not absolutely necessary even with super small paint you just have to learn to not run around with a ball in the breach and load just prior to shooting and don't point you barrel down.
6. Detent Rings - I'd rather not have detents then use detent rings.

I did not mention insert barrels because that is a complete barrel system you have to invest in and really isn't meant as a detent but is all about bore control. The side benefit of insert barrel is if you under-bore it will act as a ball retention device [detent]. I actually prefer to overbore (slightly) and use Wedgits for detents.

I agree a slight over bore is more accurate and consistent. This is why I love my ASP detent mods. Lets you put whatever barrel you want with functional detents. Especially with how inconsistent paint is today.

Oh, forgot to mention "Dummy" Detents, 3d painted fingers that you put between the barrel and breech. The little fingers hold the ball in place but bend easily out of the way when you shoot. They work great but they are easy to lose when you take your barrel out.

Vsc is an ergonomic improvement first and foremost. It's a more comfortable spot for a quick swap than BBA. I always liked it best, followed by island style (forward-pointed bottomline).
